Chapter 24 - Second Day I Loss I

Jumping quickly from tree to tree, two figures could be seen, closely followed by three others. It appeared as though the two figures were being chased by the three.

And that assumption was correct. Togi and Mata were desperately trying to escape from Kumo ninja, but things weren't going in their favor. They had been running through the forest for three hours, hoping to shake off their pursuers. Their situation was unfortunate: the team chasing them was made up of three shinobi, a clear disadvantage for Togi and Mata. To make matters worse, the ninja from Kumo weren't about to stop; the bitter rivalry between Iwa and Kumo ensured that these pursuers wouldn't back down easily. The last time their Kage had met, the Raikage had attacked the Tsuchikage, creating a lasting grudge between the two villages.

Just before Team Y was attacked

Team Y had spent the last 5-7 hours exploring the forest, searching for the needed numbers. Unfortunately, they hadn't had much luck finding what they needed, though there was some positive news: Togi had found his required number.

The two were on their way back to the makeshift base they'd set up the previous day when, without warning, three ninja suddenly appeared in front of them.

The tallest among them spoke first, "Well, well, look what we have here, two kids dressed as ninja."

One of his companions, clearly impatient, asked, "Can we kill them now, leader? This is getting boring."

"Not yet," the leader replied. "Give us all of your numbers, and I promise you won't be hurt too badly."

Togi and Mata exchanged a glance, knowing they stood no chance against the trio of Kumo ninja. The three enemies were intimidating, likely nearing the level of a Chunin.

Before the leader could continue speaking, Togi and Mata acted quickly, tossing a smoke bomb to the ground. Thick smoke filled the air, giving them the distraction they needed to make a break for it.

"They're running!" one of the Kumo ninja whispered. "What are you waiting for? Follow them!"

With the leader's command, the three Kumo ninja immediately sprang into action, chasing after Togi and Mata. As the Kumo team closed the distance, they began throwing shuriken at the fleeing duo. Togi and Mata had to slow down momentarily to dodge the incoming projectiles, but they managed to throw back a few kunai with explosive tags, hoping to slow down their pursuers.

The explosive tags caught the Kumo ninja off guard, buying them a brief moment of respite. Team Y used this opportunity to push forward, but they quickly realized the harsh truth: the Kumo ninja were faster than they were.

"We might be able to outrun them if we keep running," Togi said, trying to hold onto hope.

"It's not going to work," Mata replied. "We'll need to throw everything we have left at them to buy time."

Togi nodded. "We don't have much choice—either we keep running, or we fight, but I'm pretty sure fighting three of them won't end well."

The two kept leaping from tree to tree, occasionally glancing back to check on their pursuers. Sometimes, they'd turn to throw kunai or shuriken, but after three hours of running, their weapons were running out. Worse still, their stamina was nearly depleted, and they couldn't keep up their pace for much longer.

Mata turned to throw an exploding kunai at the Kumo ninja chasing them, and Togi followed suit, launching another one.

Togi had used his Earth Release several times during their flight, but he was running low on chakra and couldn't afford to use more powerful jutsu. His techniques were weak, designed only to slow their pursuers for a few precious seconds. Unfortunately, his chakra reserves were running out, and he couldn't keep up this strategy forever. Mata, too, wanted to help, but her jutsu required a stable stance, and running at full speed made it impossible to execute.

"Togi, we can't keep going like this," Mata said, her voice tinged with concern. "Soon, we'll both be out of stamina."

Togi's face tightened. "What do we do?"

"I still have enough chakra left to fight," Mata said resolutely. "I'll turn to face them and buy you enough time to get away."

Togi shook his head. "No, I should fight them. You're the strongest in our team, and you're the one who needs to survive this. You should move on to the next trial."

"You don't have enough chakra left to give me any real time to escape," Mata replied. "Besides, you've already met your required number. I haven't. I'm staying behind."

Togi hesitated for a moment before nodding. "Okay, but promise me you won't die."

Mata gave him a firm nod. "I promise. I won't die."

The Kumo ninja were beginning to grow frustrated as they pursued the Iwa ninja.

"Leader, the girl stopped running, but the other is still going. Should we follow the one still running?" one of the Kumo genin asked.

"No," the leader replied. "I'm tired of chasing them. Let's focus on the girl."

"What will we do with her after we catch her?" the second genin asked.

"We'll send a message," the leader said coldly.

"A message?" the genin asked.

"We'll show what happens when someone dares to mess with Kumo," the leader said, his voice filled with malice. "We'll cut off one of her arms."

something from wiki about smoke bomb.

A smoke bomb creates a cloud of smoke when it detonates. It may look like small spheres wrapped in paper or they can be more conventional canisters. Smoke bombs are typically used to blind opponents and make them easier to attack. Alternatively, ninja can use smoke bombs on themselves so that opponents cannot see what they are doing.

Smoke bombs are not limited to actual smoke, and in fact can contain any sort of gas, such as poison or a sleeping agent. In Kakashi Retsuden, Kakashi Hatake uses a special smoke bomb that dulls the senses of those caught in it, making them easier targets for genjutsu. In the anime, Hiruga uses a smoke bomb made of perfume which makes targets easy to track and detect.
