Chapter 91 - Chapter 89: The Song That Silences

The Void. An infinite, unfathomable emptiness where shadow and light blend into a frozen eternity. Wamy, lying on the inert ground, suffers, blood escaping from his lips. Before him, Ares, panting, eyes shining with assured victory. Around him, a few surviving gods, cold witnesses to this scene that seems to be the final outcome of this battle.

Ares steps forward, a contemptuous smile on his lips.

Ares:

So, where is your goddess? She's not coming to your rescue?

Wamy coughs violently, spitting blood. He lifts his head with difficulty, fixing Ares with a gaze full of defiance.

Wamy:

What are you trying to imply, huh? Big coward.

Ares bursts out laughing, a merciless laugh echoing in the abyssal silence of the Void.

Ares:

Now you're trying to insult me? Haha, that's really the turmoil of your defeat.

He raises his arms proudly, as if to welcome victory. His gaze perceives the immensity of this empty world, a place where nothing escapes, not even the greatest perceptions.

Ares:

This is the world of the Void, a place where even the most absolute and transcendent perceptions fail. They may try, but they will be denied.

Wamy smiles faintly, his face marked by suffering but still full of pride.

Wamy:

And? What is that supposed to mean to me?

Ares looks at him, still confident, a gaze tinged with disdain.

Ares:

It means your dear goddess is completely unaware of what's happening to you. If you thought she would feel it and come, you're sorely mistaken. Now, you're alone facing your destiny. But don't worry, she'll soon join you.

Wamy holds Ares's gaze with an intensity that even the other gods around them find surprising. His voice is calm but firm.

Wamy:

And you think I need her help?

The other gods exchange incredulous looks. Ares raises an eyebrow, intrigued. Wamy continues without faltering, as if addressing a fate greater than all before him.

Wamy:

I'm not here for her recognition or anything like that. I fought out of love. An angel is bound to their god by powerful ties. Even if the god sees no interest in us, we feel the exact opposite...

Ares bursts out laughing, a cold and sarcastic laugh, broken only by the heavy silence of the other gods, silent witnesses to the turmoil of words. He fixes Wamy with his piercing eyes.

Ares:

I knew it. You were just a dirty guy nobody ever really saw. You'll die alone, like the lonely love you bear for your goddess.

Wamy's gaze fixes on the void, an abyss that seems to swallow him slowly. The weight of the end approaches, the certainty of imminent death presses on his mind. Yet, in this solitude, a bloody smile forms on his lips.

Wamy:

I regret nothing at all. Dying for someone you love, that's the only good thing. But you can't understand, and you never will... Ares.

He closes his eyes, his mind swept away in a whirlwind of memories. A light breath, a gentle thought blossoming in his heart despite the pain.

Wamy (thought):

Mü Thanatos... Would you be proud to see me like this? No matter... living for you, playing for you, accomplishing for you, and finally dying for you... I believe having done all that just for you means I had the best life an angel could hope for. To serve one's god...

Far away, in her castle, Mü Thanatos sits alone on her throne, eyes fixed on a distant horizon, clouded by her thoughts. A weight in her gaze, like a call resonating deep within her soul.

She slowly lowers her head, a shadow passing over her face. Finally, she rises, her majestic silhouette contrasting with the coldness of the place.

Mü Thanatos:

Mortuus, Validus, guard my castle.

The two children, impassive, nod silently. They know the magnitude of what is to come.

Mü Thanatos opens a rift in space, a fissure in reality itself, and disappears in a breath of icy wind, taking with her all that might still hold her grasp.

In the absolute darkness of the Void, silence grows heavy, almost suffocating. Wamy, still lying on the ground, eyes fixed on the void, feels the end drawing near. His thoughts float in a sea of memories, images of his life, his missions, and especially Mü Thanatos. Those moments spent by her side, shared struggles, moments of happiness-all cross his mind like a flood of blurred images. Yet, amid this chaos, one certainty persists: he regrets nothing. To die for a loved one is not a weakness, it is the greatest strength.

Ares, still elevated, overlooking the scene, seems to savor his opponent's slow agony. His hands, still raised, trace gestures of authority in the air, as if he wanted to seal the entire universe in his victory.

Ares:

You know, Wamy, there's a beauty in the simplicity of victory. I don't bother with useless feelings. All that, what you feel for your goddess, it's just a chain. A chain that keeps you in submission.

Wamy's smile remains intact, even though every breath costs him. A smile of defiance, but also of inner peace, as if physical suffering were now just a detail.

Wamy:

Maybe... But if being bound to someone by love is a chain, then it's a chain I fully embrace. I'd rather be bound like that than live in this cold void you carry inside you...

Ares looks at him, a flash of rage passing through his eyes. He steps forward, crushing the Void's ground beneath his feet.

Ares:

You think a god like me would be a slave to human emotions? I am much more than that! And you will die, just like she will, forgotten in this emptiness!

At these words, something changes. The Void seems to react to Ares's anger. Waves of invisible energy ripple through the air like a storm ready to tear space apart.

But Wamy, in his state of suffering, is no longer afraid. He closes his eyes for a moment, then a calm breath escapes his mouth, like a last prayer, a promise to Mü Thanatos.

Wamy (thought):

If this is how my journey must end, so be it. But know this, no matter what you believe, Ares, I will never be alone. Not in love... Not in death.

He opens his eyes, his gaze anchoring in Ares's with a new strength, like a silent challenge.

Wamy:

I don't need your understanding. What I do is beyond you, beyond what you can imagine. It is a force you can neither break nor deny.

Ares, furious, prepares to attack once more. The violence of his power becomes palpable, creating distortions in the space around them.

But before he can act, a deep roar, a telluric tremor, breaks the silence. A fissure forms in the air, a luminous breach tearing reality itself.

At the same moment, the shadow of Mü Thanatos appears, crossing the rift with icy majesty. She seems to emerge from the void, an ancient force, her gaze filled with unfathomable coldness.

Ares freezes, surprise briefly invading his expression. The other gods also become aware of the goddess's arrival.

The murmurs of the gods continue to echo in the vastness of the Void, their surprise and confusion growing as Mü Thanatos advances, ignoring them.

God 1: Mü Thanatos?

God 2: Impossible, what is she doing here?

God 3: The Void even cancels perceptions, how could she...?

God 4: Someone must have told her we were here, otherwise it makes no sense...

Ares's gaze darkens as he murmurs with contained rage:

Ares: You... here?

But Mü Thanatos pays no attention to the cacophony around her. She walks majestically, her white robes draped around her immaculate body, her hood falling slightly over her face, her delicate blue hair floating behind her like an ethereal halo. Each step she takes on the Void's ground echoes like a distant sound in the abyss.

The gods present watch nervously, their suspicious and questioning eyes following the goddess's calm stride. They wonder what she could be doing in this place where even their perceptions are distorted.

She approaches Wamy, lying on the ground, his face marked by pain and suffering. She gently crouches beside him, without a word. Her hands take Wamy's head with infinite tenderness, placing it on her knees like a mother caring for her child. A heavy and solemn silence fills the space around them.

Wamy, in a titanic effort, chuckles weakly despite the suffering distorting his face.

Wamy:

I'm pathetic, huh... my dear goddess?

Mü Thanatos keeps her eyes fixed on him, her gaze hard and icy, as if frozen in endless reflection, lost in the depth of this moment. She seems to look beyond him, beyond everything, into a void that leaves no room for emotion. Her features, though marked by sadness, remain impassive.

Wamy, exhausted, coughs violently, and blood lightly splashes Mü Thanatos's cheek. But she does not react, indifferent to the pain piercing her servant.

Wamy:

Ares... attacked me with an attack bearing Zeus's very authority, and made me understand they are all against you, that they want to kill you... I was too weak, I couldn't defeat them. Nor resist that... Zeus is basically the boss of the Primordial Gods, a black angel like me stands no chance before his authority... Even you won't be able to save me, but...

A new spasm shakes his body, and he spits blood again, this time more violently. Part of his chest seems to disintegrate from the pain, his body now only a shadow of what it was.

Wamy:

You must protect yourself, goddess. They don't know you, they fear you because they simply cannot understand you...

Wamy's last words seem to vibrate in the air, carried by the weight of a silent, powerless truth. His body begins to slowly disintegrate, particles of energy dissipating his being into the Void, but his spirit remains anchored in the moment.

As he disintegrates, he murmurs, his voice soft but filled with infinite sadness:

Wamy:

My beloved goddess... tell me... Was I a good angel in your service? Did you like my service and my company?

Mü Thanatos, in an almost imperceptible gesture, slightly lifts Wamy's head, raising his torso, and offers him a delicate embrace. The softness of her gesture contrasts with the harshness of the situation, like a final tenderness in a cruel world.

Mü Thanatos:

You were the best... Wamy.

With a last effort, Wamy smiles faintly, a serene smile despite the pain eating away at his body. A delicate tear rolls down his cheek as he closes his eyes for the last time.

Wamy:

In that case... I have finished my task here...

His body, now completely luminous, slowly dissipates into the air, leaving behind a light breeze carrying his voice, like a last will:

Wamy (whispering):

Now, I leave you to the Angel of Light, Mù Sunghiun...

Mü Thanatos, eyes fixed on the now empty void, closes her eyelids as if the loss of a loved one was the end of a painful but inevitable chapter. The breeze continues to blow, carrying away the last traces of Wamy.

She raises her eyes, turning her gaze to the distant horizon, a look filled with infinite melancholy, before murmuring in a breath lost in the wind:

Mü Thanatos (internally):

Goodbye, Wamy...
