Chapter 3 - 3. His Past

While Kevin was facing the mess alone and trying to get out of his situation without any huge problem,.

****************************************************************

In one of the most high-end neighborhoods of 'Walesin City,' Austavise,

Inside the bedroom of a luxurious mansion at night, a man sits comfortably on the edge of a king-sized bed, his posture relaxed but intentional, wearing a tightly bound robe that keeps his whole upper body covered. His phone rests in his hand, its screen casting a soft glow on his sharply defined features. A small smile plays at the corner of his lips, the kind that holds amusement rather than frustration. He's looking at his friend's number, displayed on the screen—

CALLER ID- KEVIN(SON)

A number that carries a story of brotherhood, one just interrupted by the sudden end of their call.

The act feels familiar, almost like a game between them—a silent acknowledgment of the friend's intentional avoidance of the man's reply.

A woman stepped out of the bathroom, a vision of effortless elegance. Her silken robe hugged her figure loosely, the sash tied in a way that mirrored her relaxed demeanor. Drops of water clung to the strands of her freshly washed hair, shining under the golden chandelier light as she combed her fingers through them with practiced ease. Her skin seemed to glow, carrying the radiance of warm steam and fragrant bath oils. Her movements were unhurried and graceful, and her presence gave off quiet confidence and a natural allure.

The room responded to their presence with an air of luxury and comfort. The creamy walls reflected the dim golden light, the silken curtains swayed softly, and the distant hum of the night garden created an intimate soundtrack to their quiet moment together. The man's gaze finally lifted to meet hers, a warm expression settling on his face as they shared a glance that spoke of the sweetness of new beginnings. It was a picture of peaceful and understated intimacy, where the night itself seemed to celebrate their union.

But this peaceful situation did not last long:

"Come on, David, today is our day, our own special occasion, our wedding night, and here you are calling someone else while' I, your wife, am just a door away from you. It is not fair, absolutely not fair."

The woman in the robe spoke, crossing her hands on her chest, expressing her annoyance toward her boyfriend, who is now her husband, but this action just made the poor robe sway more than necessary from his position, unable to contain the fullness of the woman.

"Tell me who is important enough to have a piece of your time, which rightfully belongs to me." Her tone demands an answer that shows not only her stance toward no carelessness in their relationship but also her experienced demeanor of being in leadership .

The smile on David's face widened looking at her aggressive posture that appears quite adorable to him, similar to an angry hamster; now this is a situation where he cannot stop himself from teasing his dear wife.

"Oh, jealous are we? Well, why don't you make a guess? Who knows, you might get lucky enough, and I promise you if you make a right guess, you will get a reward satisfying enough to keep you awake this whole night."

He answered her question with a question of his own wrapped in the packing of an attractive offer, and to make the question even more lucrative, he loosened his robe just enough to let her have a glance at his well-toned chest and get heated but not open enough to satisfy her.

"Do you want me to look at your phone directly, huh?"

The woman, completely familiar with her partner's tactics, did not step inside the obvious trap laid down in front of her; instead, she cut down the whole chase directly with a single sentence. After all, what if someone else is trying to put their mark on her territory, and this partner of hers is definitely not reliable enough?

Who knows which bitch ends up getting infatuated by her husband, who unconsciously keeps charming ladies left and right without even trying, just like how moths are attracted toward fire? That's why she cannot take a chance no matter how mouthwatering this reward looks.

"Tsk-tsk, you are no longer fun anymore, Anora. Wait a minute—"

He suddenly stopped talking as if his brain were solving a very tough question that required his full mental capacity, and after a full five seconds, he slapped his fist on his palm while nodding to himself, like appreciating his own smart conclusion, and spoke in a voice filled with certainty.

"Aha, now I get it. So this is what people mean when they say, 'A woman acts like an angel until she becomes your wife."

David put up the face of an enlightened person as if he had achieved a grand revelation in life, but looking at the face of his wife, on which a few imaginary pulsating veins had appeared, he instantly raised both hands in the air, announcing his complete surrender.

When Anora still did not speak but kept staring at him while tapping her foot on the floor in a rhythmic motion as if expressing the rate at which she was losing her patience.

"Sigh, okay, cool, chill down, babe; it's Kevin I was talking to."

"What? Don't look at me like that. I am speaking a completely unfiltered truth." David protested when Anora just narrowed her eyes.

"Listen, I was just making sure that he reached his hotel safe and sound. Normally I would not have cared since this part of the country belongs to my father-in-law, but we both know that if by any chance the news of our marriage reached the ears of other KEEPERS, this city will not remain as peaceful as it appears on the surface."

When David became sure that there was no other way to save himself from this lioness, with a sigh of defeat, David decided to come clean.

Looking at the face of her husband, who appeared so cute when a little dejected, a feeling to just gobble up this being in front of her and taste him started to crawl out of her mind, but she held herself back by focusing on the explanation, and by the end of it, her expression became serious.

After taking a deep breath, Anora moved and settled down beside David on the bed.

"I can't understand why you are so ugh, I don't even know how to say it."

"Say what?"

"Your action toward him, I mean you, appears quite 'protective,' 'attentive,' 'caring,' or whatever you feel compatible with."

" 'Chuckle,' you won't understand, Anora—Kevin is special in every way. Whether as a friend or as a human, he is just built different."

"Oh, then try me so I can understand what he looks like through your eyes because even though I don't know him as well as you do, in my eyes he is just like any other person standing between the evaluation of best and average who is a little smart, above average in appearance, appears fit, earns enough to live peacefully but not lavishly, and is a little timid considering his bearing in my presence," Anora described to prove her point.

"Ha ha ha ha, yes, yes, that's how he appears to the world."

Understanding what Anora was trying to explain, David leaned backward with a laugh at first and then became silent, like he was considering whether he should speak his next word or not. Fortunately for Anora, he began speaking with a slight smile.

"Let's start from the beginning. As you already know, I have ended up leaving my house under my father's instruction to stay safe until the struggle for the new ranking stabilizes."

"Hmm, I learned about it from my father. He told me that this time almost 5 out of 6 keeper families lost their heirs, including your family, along with almost 200 level 2 deviants and an unknown number of level 1 humans."

"Yes, that's what it looked like to other countries."

"You mean there is something more to this?"

"Hey, don't interrupt me and stop misguiding my thoughts. So, where was I?"

"Yes, I have gone undercover, living as an orphan under my father's assigned foster home, and that's where I saw Kevin for the first time. He was also one of the last batch of orphan teenagers the foster home took in under my guardian command to avoid unnecessary attention over my adoption and make it look more realistic."

"At first I did not even notice him, and why should I? After all, I belong to a keeper's family, and just like any other family member, normal humans are nothing more than workers for me, but"

"But, what?" Anora irritatedly asked David, who became silent with his eyes closed, leaving her hanging.

"But it changed only three days after his arrival when my guardian, who was also my trainer, told me, 'This boy is quite interesting.'"

"When I asked how he is interesting, instead of answering me, he just ignored me with two words: 'Find yourself.'"

"Wait, wait, wait, your guardian ignored you?" Anora again interrupted him, but this time she needed an answer because it was incomprehensible to her that a mere guardian ignored David's word, considering that she herself is an heir of a keeper's family, where, except for her father and those second in command, her words are laws.

"Well, my guardian was a little...special, you see?"
