Chapter 2 - Looking For Leviathans

I stood hovering a bit before my tower. Sometimes, when the sun was setting, the various barriers and energies that were drifting around refracted the light in such a way that I questioned my strength. Some things were just so breathtaking and fleeting. A flying spell could eradicate such things in an instant. It was saddening to think about. At the same time, I created this sight. So I didn't feel too bad.

Going inside, I flew to my study and tossed the treasures over to where I was 'storing' all my others. I sat down at my desk and with a sigh pulled out my journal. I threw down notable things that happened here.

'Day 7928: Invaded a monster nest in one of the forest dweller domains. Type Rat. Retrieved items: Goblet of King Scandas IIV, seventh crown of the 12 frost lords, supreme grade mana accumulation.' The first 2 items are just items with potent mana in them and the last one is what happens when a lot of mana gathers in the same place for many eras. You get a physical clump of mana. This one is of the highest grade, and also why those rats were powerful most likely.

My next order of business was to do tower maintenance. I made my tower connected to the largest vein of mana that flows through the planet. This will keep my towers' magical functions running forever. I could also borrow mana from the vein to make myself almost omnipotent. This was boring however, so I didn't do it. Having that much energy run through your body also hurts a lot. Sometimes too much energy flows into the tower, and if that happens for a prolonged time the tower will start to overload and become the largest weapon that this planet has ever had the misfortune of witnessing. Hence, daily maintenance.

After that, I flew around for a bit and threw some criminals into prison. It was good to use my power for the greater good. But also, if they were part of some massive secret society, then they might send some strong people after me. I did already have the attention of anyone even remotely powerful, however, so it likely matters little.

'I guess I'll go sleep now.'

With magic, I could easily never have to sleep again, but not being conscious is nice sometimes.

I woke up to the feeling of not being able to breathe well.

"Geph ohp ny phace"

When my pet gets hungry it comes over to me and decides to be a nuisance. Today, it decided to lay on my head. My pet is a small fox-like monster. I saw it in the woods, so I kept it. Being with my pet was the only sort of living-thing-to-living-thing interaction I had that was not me decimating the other party. It's not that I am completely socially inept, it's just that I ended up losing one of my challenges, and when I asked someone what I should do as punishment, they said to not talk to anyone for a couple of years. Which I set to 2 years. This sucked but I didn't have too many friends anyway given I was always too busy with magic to worry about other things. Currently, I am on day 503 hour 9 minutes 25 of the challenge. I have an exact time telling device, so it's not hard to keep track of things for me. I found it on one of my adventures.

I got up and was going to feed my pet when I realized I was out of pet food. It liked the leviathans of the northern seas so I would have to go grab another one. The northern sea was thousands of miles away so I went to my gate room. I could teleport short distances without gates, but bending space over long distances depleted my mana. So instead, I just used a gate to go to previously marked locations. The gate room was one of my sources of pride. Extensive Blackstone gates hovered in the void, potent magenta mana condensed in their frames. A seemingly never-ending chamber that appeared as if you could get lost in it, without taking a single step. A small semi-circle suspended right out of the doorway, covered in glowing runes. The gate to the destination you desired would appear when standing on the platform. Stepping onto the platform, a gate leading to an endless expanse of blue appeared.

The sun was down in the north, the sky was cloudless and the moon was refracting wonderfully off the water. I flew into the water using mana as a propellant instead of flames so that I don't destroy the ecosystem.

'Something's off…'

'Why is there no life?'

From what I could feel, there were no fish, plants, or leviathans. Not ones that required mana at least … which almost was everything.

'As far as I am aware, entire ecosystems of entire oceans don't tend to migrate all at once. Someone must have done something'

It was at this moment when I also realized that there was no mana at all in the water. So maybe they did all leave for mana infested waters. I released a bit of mana and cut off my connection to it, to see if something would happen. As soon as I let go of my control over my mana, It all started to drift in a single direction. Following the mana, I soon came across a large device. It didn't have any definite shape. But it was clear that this was the cause of the disappearance of mana. Try as I might, Other than the energy sustaining the device, there was no large store of mana that I could sense. After puzzling it out for a bit I figured out that I could maintain a connection to my mana even after it got absorbed by the device. Or rather than absorbed it was transported somewhere else instantly. I conjured a wisp of mana and sent it through the device when-

"BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMM"

The device had exploded. Quickly placing a barrier around the explosion, I waited for it to die down. I had to cool off the inside of the barrier, because at this point, even if I let go of the barrier now it would still be a bomb with how much heat and steam there was inside.

Unfortunately, All connection to the space the device had been connected to had been cleanly obliterated, and was no longer traceable.
