"Talking"
—----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Gather everything, quickly! There's not much time!" A rather handsome middle-aged man with a mixture of black and blonde hair shouted, his arms moving as quickly as they could as he swiped a stack of papers off his desk.
Azazel usually wouldn't be someone you would describe as 'urgent,' as the Fallen Angel was typically rather calm and relaxed. His carefree demeanor was something his subordinates scolded him about often, as the powerful demon tended to be a bit too calm in dire situations.
So, it was a testament to how dire the situation at hand truly was for Azazel to be panicked, his face stony as he shouted out orders to the various fallen angels around him.
"Don't leave a single item in here!" Azazel ordered, swiping up a stack of books and tucking them under his arm, "Don't let him have a single clue about anything! When we leave, there shouldn't be a trace that anyone was ever here!"
"There's too much!" A rather tall, beautiful, and busty female Fallen Angel, named Benemue, hissed as she picked up a strange glowing golden ball, "This is why you don't hoard all this stuff, Azazel! Do you even know what half this stuff does?"
The woman had long purple hair, a gorgeous face that was twisted in stress, and a devilishly sexy body - with wide hips and large, heavy-looking, breasts.
"I know what it all does," Azazel grunted back, "So I know that he can't get his hands on any of it! I don't know what he wants, but we're not letting him have it!"
"If you two have time to chat, then you're not moving quick enough," A male voice grunted, belonging to the man that Azazel considered a close friend and his righthand man - Baraqiel. The man was tall and muscular, with a square jaw, bearded face, and sharp eyes. He was also hastily stomping through the room, swiping piles of paper and books into a bag.
The trio of Fallen Angels, along with another demon, were doing their best to clean up the incredibly messy and full room they were in. The room had served as Azazel's 'research' center, which meant it was filled with various unfinished magical projects and countless stacks of half-used papers. The majority of the higher-up Fallen Angels in the Grigori would call everything in this room 'junk,' and from a first glance, they wouldn't be wrong.
Stacks of papers covered in unreadable scribbles lay on every table. Ripped-up books missing pages and covers were thrown around lazily, covering the messy floor. A seemingly random collection of objects was strewn around the room, with a pile of literal tin cans sitting in one of the corners.
But, Azazel knew better. That 'junk' was the result of his countless hours spent experimenting with magic, Ki, and even souls. It was incredibly dangerous - both to be around, as some of the objects could explode from just a touch, and if they fell into their invader's hands.
"Has Kokobiel answered yet?" Shemhazai, the final higher-up in the Grigori, asked. The man looked rather thin and skinny compared to Baraqiel, and had short white hair on his head that framed his plain-looking face. If Baraqiel was Azazel's righthand man, then Shemhazai was his lefthand man.
"No," Azazel said simply. Kokobiel's mysterious disappearance came at the worst time possible - as while Azazel trusted the man the least out of any of the higher-ups in the Grigori, he was undoubtedly one of their strongest fighters.
"That bloodthirsty bastard is always going on about fighting and war," Benemue hissed in annoyance, "And yet he goes into hiding right when an opponent appears! That fucking coward is all talk!"
"It's rather poor timing indeed," Shemhazai sighed, "He was researching how to block lifeforce energy recently, was he not? That'd be very helpful right now."
"It doesn't matter - I've already set up a counterflow barrier," Azazel shook his head dismissively as he carefully picked up a gem-like object, being careful not to drop it. Azazel had known how to reverse the flow of Ki for many years, but he wasn't going to freely give that knowledge to Kokobiel when the man had come asking him. While Kokobiel was a bloodthirsty warmonger, Azazel loved the times of peace.
Abruptly, the room shook as if an earthquake had appeared, and Azazel quickly lashed out to catch another glowing gem before it landed on the floor. A large boom resounded nearby, and Baraqiel stiffened.
"Is he close already?" The man muttered, looking concerned as his body tensed.
"No way! There's over a hundred thousand soldiers between him and us," Benemue shook her head decisively, "Even if this alien is as much of a monster as you say he is, Azazel, there's no way he'd get here so quickly. Especially not if you set up a lifeforce energy-countering barrier!"
"...Pick up the pace," Azazel merely grunted, hoping she was right but not being confident about it.
Compared to the rest of the inhabitants of the demon realm, Azazel was quite a bit wiser about what happened in the outside world. He didn't know the exact strength of their attacker, but he knew the man called 'Cooler' was strong enough to cause concern for even the Supreme Demon King. Well - 'concern' might've been an exaggeration, but Azazel knew the Supreme Demon King at least had him listed as a notable person in the outer world.
And, in the demon realm, anyone who the Supreme Demon King even knew the name of was dangerous enough for Azazel to want to be as far away as possible from.
But, she's right. There's no way he's here already.
Azazel's surveillance barrier, which extended around the entirety of the planet, had picked up on Cooler's arrival just ten minutes ago. He'd hastily gathered his most trusted subordinates, and had given a planet-wide order with his authority as the Grigori Governor General: Stop Cooler at all costs. Then, he'd quickly set up a lifeforce-countering barrier and had gotten to work gathering all the research he'd worked on over the past many decades.
Azazel wasn't certain that his research was what Cooler was after, but he had a pretty good reason to believe it was - as earlier that month, on multiple occasions, small groups of aliens from the outer world had attempted to break into his research center. Azazel didn't need to be the 'mad scientist genius' type to know what was going on.
Cooler had found a way to enter the demon realm, and he was after Azazel's research. He didn't know why, but he didn't need a reason why - he wasn't going to let this dangerous information get into the tyrant's hands.
"Can't we use one of the seals on him, Azazel?" Shemhazai questioned, the man still running through any possible ways to take down their attacker.
"Too dangerous," Azazel replied simply, "If it fails, you're as good as dead."
A magical seal could work to contain or at least slow down Cooler, but it was a gambit. Even if they managed to get the seal on him, there was no guarantee it was strong enough to hold the alien. If it failed, then there was no second chance.
Another explosion rocked through the room as the group was finishing up, and suddenly an even louder boom resounded. A second later, the far wall of the room exploded open - the body of a Fallen Angel barreling through and landing a bloody lump.
"He's here!" Baraqiel shouted, verbalizing what everyone already knew. He tossed his bag toward Benemue, flexing his collection of wings as he glared at the new hole in the wall, "I'll hold him as long as I can, so get the hell out of here, Azazel!"
"Not happening," Azazel shot back instantly. He wasn't going to leave one of his closest friends to face the monster known as Cooler alone.
"You're certain he's after your research, right?" Shemhazai intervened, continuing at Azazel's nod, "Then you two take it as far away as you can. Baraqiel, we'll try to seal him!"
"You two?! No way in hell I'm leaving you both!" Benemue shook her head, glaring at Shemhazai.
"You run as well, Shem!" Baraqiel shook his head determinedly as well, "I'll buy you time, so-"
"You don't even know how to use a magic seal, meathead," Shemhazai countered, his deathly serious eyes turning to Azazel, "Azazel, if he's gotten this far then that means he's killed thousands of our kind. The least you can do to honor the dead is not let him get what he wants!"
Shemhazai turned determinedly to the hole in the wall, reaching down into his bag of 'junk' and pulling out one of Azazel's experimental seals.
Azazel glanced between the two men, his face set in stone. They were his friends for centuries - the closest people he had to family. He couldn't just leave them to die.
But, the logical part of his brain knew he couldn't do anything. The two men were powerful in their own right, and just as competent as Azazel in a fight. If they couldn't take down Cooler, then him being here wouldn't change anything.
Azazel was forced to make a decision quickly as another fallen angel's body was flung into the wall, bursting through in a bloody pile. A moment later, the alien himself appeared.
A purple hand gripped the side of the opening in the wall, gripping the stone and crushing through it in an instant. Slowly, a sharp purple foot followed, stepping into the room. A looming silhouette stalked forward, the large figure stepping into the room. A muscular purple body, fit with a long tail and two twin horns sticking out of his head. A pair of cruel, vicious, merciless eyes bored into Azazel's very soul. Just from being in the same room as him, Azazel felt a chill go down his spine.
And so, when faced with his foe, he made his decision in a single second.
I won't let him get my research.
"I'm sorry," Was his last words to Baraqiel and Shemhazai, quickly grabbing two sacks of research items. He shot forward, slamming into one of the walls and breaking completely through it, entering into a small alley behind the Grigori's base of operations.
"W-We're seriously running?! Damn it!" Benemue followed after him, but just as Azazel left the room, a figure appeared in front of him.
"I made the trip all the way here," An open hand clamped around his throat, the breath being pulled from Azazel's chest in one fell swoop, "It'd be annoying if you ran away with what I wanted."
Cooler towered over him, the man smirking cruelly as he appeared quicker than Azazel's eyes could process, even without his Ki. Azazel reached up, grasping at Cooler's hand with his own, but the aliens hand didn't even budge. His twelve wings shot outward, daggering into the sides of Cooler, but the alien completely ignored them. The sharp wings couldn't even make a dent in him - stopping in place as if Azazel was trying to cut through a wall of steel.
To his side, Benemue dropped one of her sacks, lunging at Cooler with a punch to help Azazel. In response, Cooler casually flicked his tail, slamming the appendage into Benemue's gut. The woman let out a gasp of pain and fell to her knees, clutching at her stomach as she was flung backward.
"Get off him, damn it!" Baraqiel shot forward with a light spear in his hand, a trail of lighting racing around his body. He lashed out, the spear of light slamming directly into Cooler's side and… breaking into pieces.
"W-Wha-" Baraqiel started, shocked as Cooler didn't even flinch from the blow, but didn't get to finish. Cooler's tail lashed out, wrapping around Baraqiel's neck before the man could react, and started squeezing the life out of him.
Baraqiel reached up, trying desperately to pry the tail off of his neck, but Cooler merely glanced away, not even focusing on Baraqiel even as the man choked. Baraqiel summoned another light spear, slamming spear after spear into Cooler's side, but they burst into nothingness as Cooler didn't even react.
"At least your hoarding is good for something, Azazel!" Shemhazai's voice rang out just as Azazel's vision started to blur from his struggle to breathe.
Shemhazai dived forward, grabbing Benemue's dropped bag and reaching into it. He pulled out a handful of glowing crystals, tossing a yellow one directly at Cooler. In response, Cooler merely looked at it questioningly, lashing out with his free hand and smashing it before it reached him.
However, that was his mistake. The crystal burst into pieces, and suddenly the world was filled with a massive yellow glow.
"What…" Cooler trailed as the glow brightened, and an explosion of magical power expanded in every direction. His grip on Azazel lessened as the orb of magical power expanded upward and outward, and Azazel's face squinted in focus, summoning a barrier around himself, Benemue, Baraqiel, and Shemhazai.
Cooler, unable to access a magical barrier of his own, was left to take the full force of the attack. The magical energy continued barreling outward, growing wider and wider as the ground under them cratered. The ball of pure magical energy continued to shoot even further out, consuming not only the large building behind them but all the buildings around it. In but a few seconds, the entire Capital City was turned into one giant crater.
"D-Did that get him?!" Baraqiel called out hopefully, the man gasping as he regained his breath. However, his eyes widened in horror as the bright light faded and Cooler was still standing there - the only damage he took from the city-destroying crystal-bomb of pure magical power was a small scratch on his arm.
"Run, now!" Shemhazai shouted, quickly slamming another crystal into the ground before Cooler could completely recover, "I'll stall him! Get the hell out of here!"
Azazel nodded, shooting forward and leaping into the sky - his wings giving a singular flap as he shot away as quickly as he could. Behind him, Benemue regained her breath and followed.
"You too, Baraqiel!"
"What?! I won't leave you-"
"Just go, moron! There's no reason for us to both die!"
A burst of light consumed the city again, and Cooler was once again stunned by another crystal. Azazel didn't hear Baraqiel's response over the roar of the magical power blowing outward, but the other fallen was blasting after them in the air a moment later.
I won't forget what you did today, Shemhazai.
However, Azazel didn't have time at the moment to mourn the impending death of one of his closest friends. He needed to ensure his sacrifice didn't go to waste.
"Where the hell are we going?!" Baraqiel yelled out, his voice muffled as another crystal explosion went off, "Where can we hide from that monster?!"
"Follow me!" Azazel said simply, zipping downward as they flew farther and farther from the city. As the roar of the magical crystals dwindled, Azazel landed in front of a small cave, rushing into it with a huff.
"The hell?" Benemue muttered, glancing around at the seemingly random cave, but continued to follow him.
"This is where I keep my more unstable projects," Azazel explained quickly, then tossed his sack on the ground. He leaned down, reaching in and pulling out a small purple dagger. He held it in front of him, his face twisting in concentration.
"What are you doing?" Baraqiel asked, out of breath as he entered behind the duo. Azazel didn't answer.
Abruptly, he slashed outward with the knife, and the world in front of him tore. A line of purple magic cut through the air, staying in place for a moment, and then expanding outward.
"It's called a demon gate," Azazel grunted, reaching down and grabbing his sacks again, "It leads to the outer world. It's the last place he'll expect us to be."
"T-The outer world?! This will take us there?" Benemue asked, her eyes wide.
"Yes, now hurry up," Azazel breathed out, not giving them time to answer as he leaped forward, lunging into the portal. He didn't know where he'd end up, but it didn't matter - he just needed to get as far away from Cooler as possible.
As he appeared on the other side, he blinked, looking up at the words in front of him confusedly as he landed in front of a huge building.
Where am I? What's…
His eyes scanned over the words.
