Chapter 298 - Chapter 36: The Final Plan

Regarding the sudden appearance of the Devil hunter, the Yamai sisters had no intention of trusting him in the slightest.

Their eyes darted between the Freedom Devil and the man wearing a sycophantic smile, feeling as though they had walked right into a trap.

"You, what's your relationship with that Devil over there?"

Kaguya Yamai, known for her blunt nature, wasted no time in asking directly.

"The Freedom Devil is an ally of the United States, a member of their Devil hunter agency," the man replied, seemingly not hiding anything. "He, like you, is an ally of humanity, having helped us solve many troublesome Devils. I can assure you he poses no threat to you."

"I wonder, why would a U.S. Devil hunter be here?" Yuzuru Yamai asked, continuing the conversation. "Yuzuru and Kaguya came at the invitation of the Syrian government to eliminate the Devil causing trouble here. Does this have anything to do with you?"

"Yes, the Devil causing the disturbance in Syria is indeed the Freedom Devil."

"Then you are our enemy!"

"No, no, no, please hear us out." The man wiped the sweat from his forehead, "Though we caused some disturbances, we didn't go too far. You should know that, right?"

What the man said was not entirely false.

According to the Syrian government, the Devil causing the chaos didn't do much harm.

The Freedom Devil had mostly been walking around naked in the city, forcibly removing others' clothing, and advocating the benefits of nudity.

While no one was killed and no significant damage was done, the Syrian government could not tolerate a Devil acting without restraint.

However, their official Devil hunters couldn't catch the Freedom Devil, so they had no choice but to request international aid.

The urgency of the request wasn't too high, which is why the Yamai sisters came last.

"In fact, the reason we caused the disturbance was to draw your attention, to meet with you," the man said seriously, his sycophantic smile fading. "Please forgive me, I represent the United States, and this is the only way we could meet with you, but it was necessary."

Hearing this, the Yamai sisters exchanged a glance.

From his words, it seemed that this man was not just a U.S. Devil hunter but also a representative sent by the U.S. government.

The reason for the disturbance in Syria was likely because of some other constraint preventing a formal meeting, so they resorted to indirect methods to meet with them secretly.

"Why do you want to meet with Yuzuru and Kaguya?"

"For freedom." The man spoke seriously. "I am here representing the United States of America, and I wish to establish a cooperative relationship with you."

Now they understood. He was trying to "poach" them.

The Yamai sisters finally understood why he had gone through so much effort to meet with them.

Poaching allies was a common tactic, especially for high-level Devil hunters.

However, poaching also depended on whose allies you were after.

The U.S. government, of course, looked down on Japan.

But the Yamai sisters weren't backed by the Japanese government.

What the U.S. government feared was Makima.

"From our research, we've confirmed that you two are truly allies of humanity, Devils willing to fight for humans." The man continued. "That's why I hope you will no longer serve Makima and instead join the U.S. side."

Although the sisters had already more or less guessed the reason, Kaguya Yamai still asked why.

"Because Makima is a controlling Devil. Her goal is to control the entire world and force it into the shape she desires." The man spoke seriously. "She is mad, and her plans are mad. If she succeeds, the order of the world will cease to exist."

Makima's nature as a controlling Devil wasn't only known to Japan's high-ranking officials, but also to the leaders of other major superpowers.

They were aware of her ambitions as well.

Wanting to create a world of equality was a noble desire.

However, no country would willingly accept the control of a Devil.

Moreover, what would a world of equality mean in the eyes of Devils?

Would everyone be equal, like livestock?

Would they lose their freedom and will, losing their individuality, becoming identical puppets, moving only as they were designed to?

What exactly is the definition of equality?

How would tall people be equal to short ones? How would geniuses be equal to fools? How would beautiful people be equal to those with ugly appearances?

Instead of believing in the idea of a heaven of equality, many of the leaders of the superpowers preferred to believe that what Makima wanted to create was, in fact, a living hell.

At least, for most humans, it would be a living hell.

Therefore, secretly, the superpowers had already considered Makima an enemy.

And the sudden appearance of the Yamai sisters, after being taken in by Makima, naturally became the biggest variable in the game.

In the eyes of the superpowers, the Yamai sisters were undeniably powerful and showed a friendly attitude toward humanity. If they could be persuaded to betray Makima and truly stand with humanity, Makima would lose two of her strongest allies, and humanity would gain two powerful cards.

This would greatly weaken Makima's influence.

The U.S. was playing this game, and the Yamai sisters had already seen through it.

But they had no intention of going against Makima.

After all, there was no task in their side missions to eliminate Makima, but rather to eliminate the Gun Devil.

And in this world, only the superpowers, who controlled pieces of the Gun Devil, had the authority to summon it.

Thus, they couldn't become allies of the superpowers.

At least, not until they had dealt with the Gun Devil.

"We refuse. Compared to the unclear motives of you all, Yuzuru trusts Makima more."

"Do you take us for fools? Such a low-level scheme to sow discord?"

At this point, the Yamai sisters both adopted an icy demeanor, releasing a slight aura of pressure.

Seeing this, the man's heart skipped a beat.

He hadn't expected the Yamai sisters to trust Makima so much.

According to their investigations, there should be no strong bond between the sisters and Makima. Even if they didn't agree with his invitation, they shouldn't have shown such direct hostility.

But he didn't give up and continued to persuade them.

However, under the increasingly cold gaze of the sisters, he eventually closed his mouth.

He sighed deeply in his heart.

"In that case, I have no other choice."

The man let out a slight sigh, pressed a button on his earpiece, and connected to someone.

"Mr. President, initiate the final plan."
