Her warmth contrasted nicely with the chill of his own body and he could feel her purr ever so faintly.

Just like he had anticipated, Virelle didn't voice any objections.

Yet, when he glanced in her direction, he caught the slight tightening of her jaw and the almost imperceptible twitch at the corner of her eye.

Though her expression remained composed, her displeasure crackled beneath the surface like a spark beneath ice.

He said nothing and pretended that all this interaction was normal and just pure affection.

He gave a simple mental gesture toward the old driver, who answered without a word by setting the horses into motion.

The carriage creaked and lurched forward, and its frame groaned as it exited the alley like a shadow slithering out into the light.

Drawn by the eerie spectral horses whose ghostly manes shimmered with a blue, otherworldly flame, the sight of the carriage immediately shifted the atmosphere of the street.
