Chapter 16 - Chapter Sixteen - A Happy Marriage?

I still can't believe it... Am I getting married? Wow! If someone had told me that aliens were going to invade us, I would probably be less surprised... Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating a bit!

I never thought I would get married one day... I'm still completely shaken... Especially when I think that my future husband is Aleko Dragonov! The brat I've been arguing with since I was four... It feels like I'm in one of those old TV movies that air in France at 1 PM...

And the worst part is that I'm getting married today, and I'm only 15! It's been three months since Aleko asked me to marry him... and guess what? It wasn't a dream at all like I thought! That idiot proposed to me on my 15th birthday, right after kissing Miss Flirty Ramanova! But well, I forgive him for his wonderful kiss and his beautiful eyes!

Right after he proposed and I accepted— even though I thought it was a dream at the time— we went straight to my house. He then asked for my hand from Tatko, promising to cherish me, protect me, respect me, and so on...

At first, Tatko was completely against it, but Mama somehow managed to change his mind. In the end, he gave his blessing for my marriage to Aleko... And Natalia shouted loud and clear that she always knew we would end up together!

Nonsense! She's no psychic!

On the Dragonov side, Adelia reacted pretty much the same way as Natalia. She seemed more than delighted that her best friend's daughter and her son were getting married... No surprise there! Her husband, on the other hand, said nothing, just nodded and kept reading. And Liliya seemed just as shocked as I was…

Later, we talked, just the two of us, and we both agreed that this marriage would save the people we loved. Besides, she quickly realized that I wasn't completely indifferent to Aleko's charm… much to my great misfortune!

Anyway, today is the day I will say yes to Aleko Dragonov, for better or for worse, in sickness and in health, in life and in death! This is going to be so long! Wait… that also means that tonight will be my first time! Laĭna! (Damn!) I just thought of that! Sometimes I'm such an idiot!

You know what? I have this crazy urge to run away right now! Only I could forget that after the wedding comes the honeymoon… and that couples don't just knit sweaters on their honeymoon! I'm way too naïve sometimes! Well, okay, I guess I'm naïve quite often…

"Katerina, are you ready?"

I was so out of it that I had completely forgotten the ceremony was about to start… Well, it's too late to run now!

I took Tatko's hand in mine. Just like in the movies, it was Tatko who would walk me down the aisle to where Aleko was waiting… The music started playing, and all the guests—the entire village—stood up as I walked with Tatko along a narrow path covered in flower petals. A wedding outdoors—I find it quite romantic, even if it's the same for every wedding…

When we finally reached the altar, Tatko squeezed my hand briefly, as if giving me the courage I so desperately lacked… Then he withdrew his arm and placed my hand in Aleko's.

He looks handsome in his suit, almost as if it was made just for him. Yet his outfit is quite simple—it's the fact that he's the one wearing it that makes it so stunning…

At this rate, I might end up believing that I've fallen in love with him! I really hope not…

"Good afternoon, everyone. Today, Katerina Petrova and Aleko Dragonov have decided to unite in marriage. For them, marriage is not just an administrative act but above all, another step forward in their life as a couple and as a family. They wished to organize this commitment ceremony to make all of you witnesses to their love and their union."

Yeah, right! It's as obvious as the nose on my face that neither of us is actually in love!

"Please repeat after me," The officiant continued, addressing Aleko.

"I, Aleko Dragonov…"

"I, Aleko Dragonov…"

"Take you, Katerina Petrova…"

"Take you, Katerina Petrova…"

"To be my lawful wife…"

"To be my lawful wife…"

"For better or for worse…" I cut in.

"For richer or for poorer…" Aleko continued, amused.

"In joy or sorrow…" I said, looking him straight in the eyes.

"To love you…"

"To cherish you… for as long as our life lasts… or yours…" That last part made Aleko chuckle slightly, along with the guests.

"I do," Aleko finished with a dazzling smile.

"I do," I replied, returning his smile.

Then, without even waiting for the officiant to say anything, Aleko leaned in and kissed me under the applause of the guests.

Wow, he knows how to kiss! Being his wife isn't so bad after all…

Once the ceremony was over, Aleko and I, followed by the guests, went off to celebrate and dance—just like at any proper wedding. Everything was perfect…

Suddenly, Tatko walked over to me and invited me to dance, while Aleko went off to dance with Liliya.

"I hope you're happy, Katerina?" Tatko asked, with a hint of concern in his voice.

"Very much, Tatko. I couldn't be happier!"

As I said that, I wasn't thinking at all about being married to Aleko, but rather about the fact that my family was now saved! I had managed to protect the people I loved, and nothing could bring me greater joy!

From now on, make way for Katerina Petrova Dragonov…
