The heavy silence of the room clung to Selene. It was past midnight and instead of sleeping, she was supressing thoughts of Alpha Zephyr and thinking of how else she could escape.
Then, the distinct bolt of the door unlocking jolted her upright. Her breath hitched, and her heart hammered against her ribs in fear.
Then, instant relief washed over her in a dizzying wave as Isolde hurried in, a cloth-covered tray held carefully in her hands. For a terrifying moment, Selene had believed it was Alpha Zephyr.
"Hello," Isolde murmured, a guilty shadow in her eyes as she set the tray down and settled beside Selene. Her gaze searched Selene's face with genuine concern. "Are you alright? Pardo told me the Alpha took you away earlier. Did he hurt you?"
"No… I mean, he did scare me," Selene admitted softly. "Maybe I deserved it. I got caught trying to escape." She found herself confiding in Isolde, a surprising ease settling between them.
