The gazes of many froze—stilled in a silence so deep, not a soul knew how to respond.
Except for Rose. She only smiled, brilliant and unshaken. Not once did she question him. Not even for a second did she think his words were ridiculous.
If he said he would do something, then he would.
And if he wanted to do it, then it was already as good as done. Because her Little Fatty, no matter how impossible the promise...never spoke in vain.
She remembered when he told her he'd take her to the movies on certain weekends, and even when life pulled them in different directions, he tried and did it. She remembered the nights when her heart ached for the parents she missed, and he showed up at her room with pizza, wings, and that same steady promise in his voice.
Everything would be okay.
That was another promise he made.
And even that one, he had never broken.
