Mary stood there with the gun to her head as I watched her, helpless. The fact that they'd kill her just to take me down made me want to protect her even more.
"If you kill a doctor you're just fucking yourself over."
"We have another."
"That's bullshit."
To my surprise Mary said, "I'm the only one."
My breathing stopped when the leader pulled the trigger, blood spraying across the room. Before they could successfully find cover I shot the leader in the side of the head but when I moved on to the next person they moved just in time for the bullet to burn past them and embed itself in the wall. A moment of silence passed. A dark cloud lowered enough to weigh down my heart. Mary's death was senseless. It was maddening.
"We'll let you leave!" One of the guards shouted.
"I'm bringing the others."
"You're crazy if you think we'll allow that!"
"Call me crazy, then."
I heard hushed voices before the same man spoke again, "Fine."
