Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: All Come to Take Refuge with Sang Ning

The fans of Shen Yi and Song Shiye kept sending barrage comments, berating Director Sun.

[Why did our baby turn to Sang Ning? Don't you have a clue why?]

[Look, the kid's been rejected so badly he's doubting his whole existence. The arrangement itself is unreasonable, no benefits for the farmers, yet expecting the guests to freeload? Dream on!]

Some cursed Director Sun, while others aimed their anger at Sang Ning.

[Sang, you Bitch loves tying herself up with male celebrities to stir up CP rumors. She'll probably pull the same trick again this time, huh?]

[Poor Xiao Ye baby, he's still just a kid, about to fall victim to Sang Ning's schemes.]

[Our Shen Yi baby is miserable too. A ready-made top celeb offered right to her doorstep—Sang Ning's got to be thrilled.]

[You fans are honestly hilarious. Was it Sang Ning begging Shen Yi and Song Shiye to come? Didn't see your dear star practically throw themselves at her. Poor goddess, having to deal with brainless fans like you.]

When leaving the village entrance, Shen Yi and Song Shiye still had some confidence. Their looks were outstanding, their popularity high—they were dubbed as the ultimate charms for both young and old alike. Surely the villagers would cut them some slack based on their faces, right?

But reality smacked them hard in the face—the villagers of Yuan Village were simply not into celebrities. Looking at them was no different than seeing strangers.

To successfully find a place to stay, Shen Yi and Song Shiye pulled out all the stops—singing, dancing, acting—but failed to win over the villagers even a little.

After their performances, the villagers only asked—

Can you drive a tractor?

Can you harvest rice?

Can you fertilize crops?

Shen Yi and Song Shiye shook their heads in confusion every time: "No."

The villagers rolled their eyes: "Worthless good-for-nothings, trying to freeload off us? Do you think we're suckers?"

No matter how much Shen Yi and Song Shiye promised to work hard and learn, the villagers ignored them altogether.

Eventually, Mr. Shen and Grandma Song stepped in to try persuading the villagers themselves.

Mr. Shen, though a retired manager from a state-owned enterprise, had spent time aiding villages in poverty during his youth. He'd chopped pigweed, mixed feed, threshed grain—all those tasks weren't new to him. He eagerly pitched himself as hardworking and promised not to be a freeloader if accepted. But the villagers didn't buy it—the city folk, no matter how capable, wouldn't outdo them.

A kindhearted villager, noticing Grandma Song's old age, agreed she could stay for 30 days, but only if she didn't bring her worthless grandson along.

Song Shiye felt unfairly treated, while Grandma Song couldn't bear to leave her grandson in such a predicament. So, they decided to keep looking for a household that would take them in.

As they walked, they bumped into Shen Yi's family. At this point, the show's cameraman informed them Sang Ning's household had settled for a deserted cowshed as their lodging. The cameraman encouraged them to keep searching for a decent place and warned them not to follow Sang Ning's example.

The elder driving the tractor had already gone home to fetch a hoe and sickle for Sang Ning. On his way back, he overheard the cameraman mentioning Sang Ning living in the deserted cowshed, and stepped in to chat.

"Young man, are you talking about Xiao Sang, the girl? That deserted cowshed is mine. I've already given it to Xiao Sang to stay. She told me your production crew would bring supplies to her house."

Shen Yi and Song Shiye were dumbstruck when they heard the old man's words.

Could Sang Ning have made some shady deal with the crew?

Without a second thought, the two decided to stop looking for lodging with their families and immediately asked the elder to give them a lift—they were heading for Sang Ning!

Upon seeing the sudden arrival of four people, Sang Ning found herself with a headache, especially now that Mr. Shen and Grandma Song were standing right in front of her.

"Xiao Sang, can we stay with your family here?"

Mr. Shen, while stern-looking, had an expression of urgency mixed with a hint of grievance. Grandma Song, on the other hand, was naturally a kind and smiling elder whose warmth was impossible to resist. Deep down, Sang Ning couldn't turn away such a lovely grandma.

She nodded: "Sure, but the weeds in the courtyard need clearing first…"

Before she finished speaking, Song Shiye and Shen Yi had already stepped forward and grabbed sickles.

"Clearing weeds? Leave it to me and Brother Yi," Song Shiye said confidently, patting his chest and then slapping Shen Yi's shoulder for emphasis. "Right, Brother Yi?"

Shen Yi maintained his usual aloof expression but gave a slight nod and replied calmly, "Mm."

Without another word, he walked straight into the courtyard, bent down, and started clearing weeds.

Song Shiye joked with Sang Ning, "Sangsang-jie, see? Brother Yi's the action type—I can't slack off either."

Song Shiye joined him in the courtyard while Sang Chuan stood there dazed. Were celebrities really this intense? He genuinely couldn't understand their world.

Sang Ning shoved a sickle into Sang Chuan's hands: "What are you staring for? Learn from them! Sweet-talking and hardworking—how did I end up with such an annoying little brother like you?"

Sang Chuan immediately snapped, "Since you like him so much, why don't you make him your brother instead!"

Sang Chuan raised his voice, and Song Shiye, who was clearing weeds in the courtyard, looked up and joked, "Sangsang-jie, would you mind having one more brother?"

Sang Chuan turned his head and glared at Song Shiye. Why hadn't he realized there was a sly little green tea here too?

No matter how feisty Sang Ning got, she was still his actual sister—it wasn't Song Shiye's place to butt in.

After bidding farewell to the elder, Sang Ning politely invited Mr. Shen and Grandma Song into the courtyard. The cowshed was abandoned, but the courtyard was spacious, large enough not to feel cramped even with eight people inside.

Mr. Shen and Grandma Song rolled up their sleeves, eager to help clear weeds. Sang Youming and Hu Zhi quickly stopped them.

"That won't do, won't do—guests shouldn't do heavy work. Let the kids handle it."

[I'm dying of laughter—Mr. Sang and Mrs. Sang really think of this cowshed as their own house, huh?]

[Well, they did grow up in tough conditions. Their adaptability is insane. Bet if you asked them to sleep with pigs, they'd sleep soundly.]

[The comment above is so rude! If you can't talk properly, don't say anything.]

[Reported the fool above.]

[Report +1]

Feeling awkward about standing idle, Mr. Shen grabbed a sickle and insisted on helping clear weeds.

Sang Youming and Hu Zhi couldn't stop him, joining the weeding party themselves in the end.

But Grandma Song, at 75, was firmly barred from helping. Sang Ning carried a large stone from outside the courtyard with her bare hands and placed it down for Grandma Song to sit on.

Grandma Song understood relentless insistence would only disrupt the younger ones. She complied and stayed seated, not moving.

[Damn, Sang Ning's girlfriend energy is off the charts—carrying such a big stone like it's nothing.]

[All those trolls saying Sang Ning lacks manners, step up and take your hits. This beauty clearly respects elders and cares for the young!]
