Chapter 15 - Captains face off

Wooden stakes shot forward with precision, two immediately sinking into the rubbery flesh of the captain. The buckshot and pistol fire never served any damage to the boy, but these sharp implements quickly carved into him.

Despite the rushing blood and countless darts firing at him Luffy pushed on, running straight at the golden giant figure of Don Krieg. When he was but a few steps away from reaching the man, he brought out an iron sheet cluttered with protrusions that could put a hedgehog to shame. Those nails were larger than a few inches, it was as if the inside of an iron maiden had been removed and used as a cloak.

"HAHAHA! Try hitting me now if you can, monkey boy."

All the same he punched straight into that iron sheet, blood flowing from his hand like a river. For just a paltry bit of damage on his enemy. Don Krieg was sent flying, but between that armour and the cushioning from that iron sheet I doubt he sustained much damage.

"Don't think a shield of thorns or those spears will be enough to send me to an early grave!"

Smoke suddenly rolled from the deck of the ship and neither of the captains could be seen. For a moment it was quiet until Don Krieg appeared in full view at the top of a destroyed mast. The smoke slowly creeping towards the water. He had the high ground and a single pathway to lead Luffy up.

"What's wrong? Did you get tired? The strong always survive, boy."

"Then I guess that means I'll be the last one standing."

"Bring it, brat!"

Luffy ran straight up the sunken mast towards him. It was obviously a trap!

"No Luffy, don't!" Why don't you just stand down? Why can't you just give in?

A sudden explosion erupted as the golden giant swiped his spear towards the ground. He smiled maliciously.

That smile was short lived as two long arms shot through the smoke and impacted against the shell of the steel armour.

"It doesn't matter how many times you hit it Straw-hat. This armour is impregnable. In the end that's all you had. Just give up and fall!" He laughed once more, only to be interrupted by a single large vein appearing in his armour, a crack. One that was spreading slowly into multiple fissures.

Below the floating figures of these captains, the previous impact must've reacted with the gunpowder on the ship as a chain of explosions rung out. Gravity didn't care for such events as both captains picked up speed, falling towards the sea.

"BAZOOOKAAA!! Luffy's voice rang out as his hands smashed, driving into the already battered armour of the giant. Slowly it crumbled as a hole pervaded through the front and back, falling away as small chunks into the sea. Blood spurted from the Don's mouth and the whites of his eyes begun to flutter to the surface. His head threatening to loll back and be put to rest. Even unconsciously he was resisting that temptation. Don Krieg was nothing if not stubborn. He had escaped the clutches of the marines as a stowaway and stolen a ship from under them. Through years of trickery and deception he had amassed weapons of infamy and produced the largest fleet in the entire East Blue.

"I win!"

"…As- As if. I- I ALONE AM THE FINAL VICTOR!" He screamed in a bloody fury as much awake by his senses as he was by an overbearing bloodlust. An iron net surrounded Luffy as he fell uselessly through the open air.

"Tch, damnit." In annoyance the straw hat fumbled and twisted in the netting attempting to free himself from the restraints.

"How's that brat? Sink to the bottom of the ocean!" He dragged the end of the net with him as they both hurtled towards the water's surface.

"That's our Don! TAKE HIM OUT!" His layabout goons shouted from the safety of the sea.

"Nyahaha! That's fine, my arms and legs are free." After struggling for a brief moment his legs extended and wrapped, coiling themselves around each other in a helix, his feet cinching down on the Don's head like a vice.

"And now it really is over. SLEDGEHAMMER!" The once indomitable golden giant was now swinging, revolving in the air like a propellor as he was thrown violently towards the deck of the Baratie. His golden armour no more than a memory and his strength a feeble illusion of the past. He plummeted down to the ground, his wax wings incinerated by the sun and the hopes of a new day. His lifeless body lay on the deck, a smattering of wooden debris was the resting bed for a once monumental threat.

"Ah, I can't swim! H-Help, please!"

"See, that's what that unwavering spear can get you. I seem to know an idiot that threw that spear away for a stupid reason." A faith that defeats even the fear of death… I never intended to throw that spear away, I traded it for something else... For someone else and a dream I wanted to do my part to realise.

"Are you going to get him? Sea devils, those that eat devil fruits lack the ability to swim in return for those abilities. That kid will drown." Zeff added after a moment. You didn't think to mention that earlier!

"Now you tell me old man. That idiot!" I ran towards the edge of the ship immediately swimming as fast as I could to retrieve the captain, and the victor of this fight. He really did it. Even after all that. What seemed to be useless fighting actually paid off in the end… I just couldn't lie to myself anymore. Even if it was a useless dream, even if I couldn't pursue it myself… I can't keep lying to myself. I just can't do it anymore not after seeing them firsthand. That swordsman and the rubber captain. After fighting that much you can't die here, wait for me!

I glided through the open ocean as the iron net came into view. That faith, that determination that broke through even the toughest armour, that filled me with my own determination. I won't allow that dream to come to an end so soon!

Ahhh. After all this time.

All Blue. How amazing it would be to see that sight for myself. All the life of the sea in a single location.

Ahhh. All Blue. The jewel of the sea, an allure which might transcend even the most beautiful woman… Well, let's not get ahead of ourselves now.

I grabbed the one responsible for my newfound resolve, rushing to the surface as soon as possible.

"Oi, wake up! You can't die after saying all that! What happened to pirate king, huh?! ANSWER ME!"

"…hmmn." A small sound reached my ears. Quietly lowering my ear to his head an undistinguishable snore reached my eardrums. This guy was asleep?!

…He really didn't have a care in the world.

"…I- I. AM THE STRONGEST!" Oh, give it a break already!

"Captain, please stop already!"

"RAAAAAHHHHHH!" Swaths of the Don's crew were thrown aside by the aggressive movement of their captain. The whites of his eyes visibly strained and his voice gravelly, he wasn't even conscious. You had to give him props for trying at least.

"Stop. Don Krieg." A single fist impacted against his abdomen bringing the unarmoured giant to his knees.

"Gin!" Gin stood tall even with MH5 riddling his lungs and the countless wounds he received from fighting. The giant that was his captain lay over his shoulder, finally resting. Not a moment too soon either.

"Sanji-san. Thank you. And that guy there. I was lacking in resolve. I've been hiding behind Don Krieg's name for years, there's too many things I've done I'm not proud of. But he's shown me with resolve and determination the things I've spent my life fearing don't matter. Getting hurt or being cast aside means nothing in front of ambition. Would you leave a message for him from me?"

"…"

"I'll see you again in the Grand Line."

"You mean even now-?"

"I don't have long. Perhaps that's why I don't mind what comes next. Before I realised it; Don Krieg's ambition became my very own. So, now we're retreating gracefully and starting anew. Forget my debt to Don Krieg, I've long since repaid it. To the one that was the strongest in my eyes, from now on I'll walk on the same level. This time I want to do it with my own will in my own way… That way there's no escape for me… How liberating…" The same way that Luffy had provided me with the resolve to look my dream once more in the eye, it seemed that Gin had been given the same opportunity. He was breaking free from the reins that had held him in place. It was commendable.

"Patty. Carne. Give them the shopping boat and some food supplies."

"Huh? But what are we gonna do about our shopping?"

"I said get the damn boat!"

"…Fine. No need to shout…" They said whilst sniffling back some fake tears. Annoying bastards.

"Now that I can't do. I won't allow it. It's Unacceptable." The bounty hunter with shades on stood with his sword drawn. His ally just a few steps behind him.

"…Let me ask you Gin. Even if he gave you food, shelter and warmth. A home to return to. Does that permit him to take them from others or force you into orders that you don't want to follow? To kill and maim your fellow man, for little more than his profit and amusement?"

"…"

"You've shown genuine remorse for your actions. However, people like him don't change without living out their consequences. He was once a prisoner, perhaps if he had finished his sentence, he might be a different man today." Rehabilitation, huh? I didn't believe it was so effective. I had been chained and left to the side, punished to become something I was not and could never become. The bars that sequestered me were supposed to act as some guiding structure for my metamorphosis. It was nothing but torture under the guise of altruism. 'I do this for your sake.' 'You're weak, this is needed to become stronger.' I was convinced I was something punishable, that my existence itself was a crime. Even in the face of that, I could not change. In the end the only thing I could do was run.

People didn't change by chains or whips. They might break from the unbearable pressure or even run in the face of it. But they never became a different product. A persons' change was internal, it required guiding hands and their own choices to reach that level. Suffering was probably necessary on that journey, but along the way came two different paths. And after that two more paths. And again and again and again. Every little change brought you closer to the person you are today. That was what I thought, people like Don Krieg are made through thousands of bad choices until they reach this shitty resting place.

A man like Don Krieg would likely remain the same. His fundamental world view wasn't something that we could change at this point. The truth of the world was thrust before his eyes many times and yet he never understood. He was too far along his path.

I am the strongest he would say. I rule these seas. I have a fleet of over 5,000 men.

They were all lies. The strongest swordsman didn't spare him a glance. He couldn't leave this East Blue, the weakest of the four named seas. And his fleet was nowhere to be seen. If observations that even a child could make were unobservable by the great strategic mind of Don Krieg, then he was too far gone to help.

"The question is: are you prepared to follow this man and ensure he follows that punishment. Are you prepared to go with him? Would you follow this man even if it meant your imprisonment alongside him? I know that each and every one of these men wouldn't, he inspired no such resolve or confidence in any of them!" The bounty hunter resolutely stated. If it was Gin I have no doubt he would follow Don Krieg even to that end. He was prepared to throw his life away for a single order that his captain issued, and by that point he wasn't even a member of their crew anymore… Or at least that might've been the case before Gin changed. There was a single-focused determination in his eyes now.

I found myself wondering; What was it that made Don Krieg and Luffy different? I was having trouble pinpointing just what it was… Both of them attempted to fight Hawkeyes regardless of the chances of their own victory. Both confidently asserted their own goals for the world to hear. Was it just a question of their methods? Of their morals? Don Krieg utilised cheap tactics, but they were effective. He was basically what pirates were known for, he was emblematic of their entire philosophy. Pirates; lie, cheat, steal, plunder and pillage as they please. Luffy in comparison… What did he even want? To become pirate king, to what end? After that, what? Was he even thinking about these things? He had conviction, Luffy wouldn't choose the path of least resistance. Is that what it came down to in the end?

The old man threw a glance my way, his eyes zoning in on my own.

Don't treat me like the same thing old man! It's nothing alike. I serve here out of my own volition. I'm not brainwashed, and you haven't made me reliant on you. If you call this the same thing then I willingly put the collar on in this instance! I'll continue to work here so that your dream shall become reality, the words that come out of your mouth won't change that decision!

"If Don Krieg leaves here, he'll just recover and go back to his old ways. The main reason we're here is for his bounty." They were bounty hunters. Initially they were going to take Gin and then wait for the crew to starve and arrest the lot of them. Would they have averted this whole conflict? Possibly. We've already decided that something like that doesn't matter, so long as starving customers ended up on our doorstep, we will serve them. No matter who they might be.

"…"

"What do you expect of us? We're pirates, of course this is how we live." I was remiss to agree, this is what pirates were known for, Gin was right. But after seeing those two, I couldn't help but envision something better than that grim reality.

"That's not true at all. You've seen it firsthand. Luffy and his crew are pirates, yet they haven't spread despair or fear to random civilians. They allow others to follow their own dreams. You're like a hero, Luffy." The bounty hunters both turned to the sleeping straw hat. Who immediately rushed to a wake, a glare setting on the two bounty hunters as he jumped to his feet.

"Absolutely not!"

"Eh, Luffy-san?"

"I will never be a hero!" What? It isn't a particularly bad thing to be, you know?

"Ehhh… But you just saved everyone, didn't you?"

"I beat his ass because he was annoying. Plus, I don't have to be a waiter anymore!" Luffy threw his arm around long-nose and begun to dance in victory. He really wasn't suited to any job requiring delicacy…

"I was trying to make a good point here… Zoro, help me out… He's asleep. Of course he's asleep. Usopp, your help perhaps?" In all fairness the swordsman is gravely injured, it's better for him to be asleep.

"…I don't like how you asked me last, but sure… Listen here, Gin! You're a proper man, real tough and stuff. You believe in the good stuff like repaying your debts, right?" He pointed a single finger at Gin, from behind his captain…

"I wouldn't be here today if Don Krieg and Sanji hadn't saved me."

"Then, think of it this way; Don Krieg owes a lot of people a debt of service with the damage he's done to them. Prison is just a way of paying that off." By that logic he could just help people instead of imprisonment, right? Not like that idea would naturally form in Don Krieg's mind…

"…"

"…Let me make this clear, you won't be taking Don Krieg or any of the men." Gin readied himself, his gaze directed at the bounty hunters.

"You would make us use force?"

"If you are resolved to take them, whether it's the poison or one of your swords here, make sure you put me in the ground. I won't let go of my dream now, after only just finding it."

"You are resolved to do that without question?"

"Of course."

"…"

"…There's been enough fighting for one day. Be sure that if I catch word of you doing the same again, we'll hunt you down. Whether we can beat you or not!"

"…I was complicit in what drove Don Krieg to this. If he acts in a way that should soil our dream, I'll put him in the ground myself."

"Good enough." They sheathed their swords.

Patty and Carne finally brought the small fishing boat to the front of the deck. It'd be a tight fit.

"Should I return it?" Gin asked after piling the crew into the narrow vessel.

"If you've got the guts to, small fry."

"Yeah! Try us anytime you punk!" A few of my colleagues had shouted at their retreating figures.

"Hahaha! What a terrifying restaurant." He uttered quietly as the small sloop sailed towards the horizon.

"Are you sure about that Johnny? I thought you needed the bounty?" Long nose asked.

"Gin's decent enough, he won't allow Don Krieg to run wild anymore. Besides, did you really think I was going to let you guys fight Arlong alone?"

"Thank God, I thought just the three of us would have to fight them! My saviour, Johnny-sama!"

"Hahaha! That's right, praise me more!" The bounty hunter's nose almost grown as long as his companion's.

"My brother just isn't honest with himself. We've already accomplished our goal. That wouldn't have been possible without you guys. The least we can do is offer our help in getting your ship back." The headbanded bounty hunter said between their bout of praise.

"What're you telling him that for? It's just what felt right at the time. Besides, I'm worried about Aniki, he's in no shape to fight." The worry was evident even without seeing his eyes. A cut like that… It's a miracle he's alive.

"Oh yeah, cook. You should join us!" Luffy suddenly grabbed me by the shoulders.

"Wha-! I can't, I've got this place to look after!"

"Aww, c'mon. You're strong, join us!"

"I said no! There's something I need to do here."

"Why not?! It'll be fun! You can meet Taka and Nami as well."

"Nami-chan… No, you can't tempt me with such trickery! Sea devil. I'll go to the Grand Line eventually… But now isn't the time."

"Hmph." I watched as the old man walked back into the diner.

"Luffy! We can't stay here forever, we need to go and get the others! If we leave it too long, they might move from that island." Long nose shouted nearby the bounty hunters' sloop.

"Food! Food!"

"This isn't the time for that!"

"I'll make you some stuff to go." I could do at least that much for them.

"Really?!"

"Wait a bit."

"Awesome! You're a nice guy, cook! You should join us!"

"I just said no, idiot!" Is his brain rubber as well? It's like the words I'm saying just bounce off of him.

Entering through the destroyed double doors and wrangling a few bits together, I'd make my signature. Anything less than that wouldn't be good enough for them, especially considering the trouble they went through.

Dispensing the proper seasoning and adding garnish, they were almost done. Maybe something decent to wash it down? I'm sure the old man won't mind if I grab something we've been saving for them. The restaurant might not even exist anymore if they didn't beat him…

Resting the portioned meals onto the counter I searched in the freezer for an appropriate beverage to pair with it.

"Who made this?" The old man's gruff voice sounded out the kitchen, even from inside the freezer I could hear him.

"It was me old man, why?"

He took a single spoonful and sipped the dish's broth.

"Shouldn't waste food I suppose." He made an exaggerated grimace as the hot liquid entered his mouth. "It's horrible." After finishing a plate he dropped it onto the cold kitchen floor. Old man, what are you-! It's the same recipe I've shown you before, I didn't make it any differently!

"Really? Let's see… It's awful!" Patty grabbed a spoon and tested the dish as well, spitting into the sink. A few other cooks came to test the dish, each repeating what the last had said. I don't even need to taste it, I've made this hundreds of times. What made your cooking any better, Old man?!

"Sanji, you're on waiter duty. I will not serve my guests this garbage."

"How's it any worse than what you serve?!"

"…You think this swill is anything for a customer to eat?"

"Old geezer!"

Smack!

He struck me right across the cheek. It hurt. So much more than any of his kicks. It was the first time he had ever used his hand to strike me. My vision was swimming and beginning to grow red, it was all I could do to simply escape from the kitchen for a moment.

Lighting up a cigarette, I took a well needed reprieve. The nicotine rushing to my system, a welcome replacement to the anger that was rushing through my veins.

"Whatcha' doin?"

"Luffy." I don't know what came over me, but perhaps it was seeing the man responsible for my sudden renewal of resolve. Or perhaps the incident in the kitchen. But I felt like talking about that dream with someone once more. "You ever heard of All Blue?"

"What's that?"

"A legendary ocean. All marine life lives together in the same place. Fish and sea flora from East, West, North and South Blue all in one place. Teeming with life. With water so blue it makes the sky look dull in comparison… It's a heaven for chefs like me." I waxed poetic about the fantasy place like I had only done when I was a child. Was this what Gin was feeling now, this sudden rush of excitement?

That old man… All of them. That's what they were trying to do… To push me away so that I could follow that dream… That isn't your choice to make!

"Sounds cool. Well, why don't you go and find it?"

"…I can't do that. I owe the old man."

"But the old man told me to-" Told you to what? This old man-! Will you stop at nothing to get me out of here?

"Sanji. Go and clean the toilets." Before Luffy could finish his sentence, the old man appeared from above.

"Tch. Is that what you want old man, to run me out of this place for good?"

"So you were aware? I've dealt with an annoying little brat like you for far too long. Someone showing up on my doorstep to take you, it's a dream come true." If I'm that unwelcome… I'll just go. I turned to Luffy.

"…We've both got ridiculous dreams."

"You mean?!"

"I'll join you on your journey to become pirate king, to fulfil my own dream of finding the All Blue. You got a problem with that?"

"NONE!"

"That's how it is old man."

"Hmph. Good riddance." He disappeared back into the upper floors, probably back to his own dorm. I guess I should grab my things.

Gathering my things and having one last look around the restaurant. What's it been? More than ten years ago we started this place? This has been my home for the last decade… My first home.

That old bastard really did a number on me here… He whacked me on the head for peeling an apple wrong. The skin was too thick, amateur technique. I was only 11 at the time. Now I could peel the same apple without even looking and keep the thickness consistent. A few of those cuts were deep enough to leave scars I could notice today. The tiny scratches on my index finger were the reminder.

Stepping through the destroyed entrance the rest of the staff were all there. Stood to watch as I departed.

There's no need for some sort of farewell speech. That wasn't how men see each other off. One of the first lessons I had learnt from the old man.

"Sanji! This is for all those years dealing with your shit!" Patty and Carne attempted to hit me from behind with their oversized utensils. I stepped back and gave each a sharp kick to the head. Looks like you'll have to harbour that grudge a bit longer guys.

"You don't need to say goodbye?" My new captain asked.

"No. This is fine." I wanted to leave after finally gaining that old man's approval. After meeting his expectations of what a cook is, in the end it turns out I wasn't capable of that…

"Let's go."

"Sanji." What did he want now?

"Don't catch a cold."

Goddamnit…

Tears flowed easily without any consideration for me, for what I wanted.

"Owner Zeff!" I turned and kneeled, my face a mess of snot and tears. Even after all those years, I could be reduced to this childlike state once more… "I'm sorry for all the shitty things I put you through all these years. I'll never forget the kindness you showed me. Damnit!" But even if it's pathetic, even if it's ugly I wanted this man… The old geezer to know exactly what he had done for me. Just what he meant in my life.

"Tch… Ngh. We're gonna miss you too, you bastard!" Patty and Carne and the other staff all pointed at me yelling expletive after expletive at me with tears in their eyes. Shitty bastards…

"I'll see you guys all again, you bunch of bastards!" It was far away, and I wasn't completely sure. But I thought I had even noticed a tear shed by the old man.

"It's getting late, we might not make it to Cocoyashi before dark. We'll have to find land or wait out the dark."

"Let's just hope that guy hasn't sailed somewhere else in the meanwhile."

"Oh, Sanji-san. Zeff told me to give you something." Yosaku handed me a small piece of paper, it didn't look like anything particularly important. Why didn't he just give it to me earlier? Or just say something…

"Here? Why didn't he just give me it-"

"…"

"Damn geezer."

Make the same for me next time.

That was all it said.

"I thought men were supposed to part without any words… This is cheating…"

I slid the paper into a small seam in the knife set I had brought aboard.

 [Piracy?]

"What the hell are you doing here?"

"Just a passing curiosity in our navigator. You left without even saying goodbye."

"…For a reason. Why are you pretending to be a part of the crew now? You weren't interested before."

"I'm a member of their crew as much as you are. I thought that was tacit information, was I wrong?"

"…In the moment, I just needed the best option to secure more funds. I don't let such opportunities go by."

"Certainly that would be the most appropriate, the best choice for you. So why didn't you ask me to come along with you?"

"Isn't it obvious? I don't trust you… And it's none of your business." That was weak. In this situation you should be using every single person you have around you, if you really wanted to save these people. The methods didn't really matter so long as they were free at the end of the day. In this case Nami has failed.

"That's a shame, was it a lie when you said it on the beach?"

"Obviously." It was a lie and at the same time it wasn't. We were gradually getting closer as was the inevitability by spending time together. It was the reason she was the only crew member I consciously made an effort to get acquainted with.

"And the rest of the crew? You don't wish for them to come here?"

"No." She had time to clear her head and gather her resolve. Her answer was immediate and much more deliberate than before.

"You're going to be disappointed then."

"…"

"I already told you before. He won't leave without you."

"They won't even find m-… You. YOU! You led them here?!"

"Guilty."

"How did you even-"

"The poster and the tattoo, not hard to put it together. I don't blame you. Not even Zoro was watching us when those bounty hunters burst in. You very nearly left without a single trace."

"But why-"

"I shouldn't even need to say it. Or at least, I was going to say that. I only just received the information that your payment is nearly finished. You must be ecstatic."

"…"

"…"

"You say that as if you already knew."

"Who knows? I had guesses from the tattoo and your obsession with money. I was just lucky, turned out to be pretty close."

"And what did you think was happening?"

"Bluntly, you're a slave." They were merely predictions before, but now I was certain.

"…I am a member of Arlong's crew, thanks to the deal we made-"

"I don't need to put chains around your wrists or ankles to call you a slave. I called you that because it is what you are. You exist for Arlong's sake. That's it. You are no more than cattle. You serve your purpose, that's all."

"You don't know anything! When I finish that payment, I'll finally! Finally be…"

"Free? If you wanted freedom you should've left for good. Forgotten about this place and never come back."

"…I could never do that!" She looked shocked that I even suggested such a thing.

"Really?"

What was so surprising? Your life was your own to control. Why would I continually risk it and place it under the control of someone I didn't like? Tearing those threads, those relationships that tie you to this place. That was the truest freedom you could imagine… I wanted to see. See just how important these relationships are… Do they mean anything in the face of true freedom?

True freedom was not tying yourself down to others, it was the absence of connection. To remove yourself from matters of the world whilst still existing in the collective.

I was here without a connection in this world. By all means I shouldn't be here. No one knows me, and no one will remember me. That made me free to do as I please. That freedom… It would be nice to have a companion that felt the exact same.

I want to test it. And that opportunity will come much sooner than she anticipates.

A bit of a long one. Bear with me, quite a few things needed to be done in this chapter so the pacing may have been all over the place. For that I apologise.

Don Krieg needed to be defeated, Gin removing himself from Don Krieg's metaphorical shackles. Zeff and the Baratie staff trying to reject Sanji and his teary-eyed goodbye. Sanji accepting his dream once more etc. I can understand that it may be boring to retread old ground, but they are necessary for future character developments. And I can't very well just summarise it or Sanji's departure from the crew will seem flippant as if he never cared in the first place.

But yeah, a bit of a mess of a chapter. Hopefully the snippet with Ayanokouji and Nami gained some of your interest at the end. We'll return to him next chapter.

Hopefully you all enjoyed the chapter, let me know any of your thoughts in the comments below.
