Chapter 49 - Trapped

The aftershocks came almost immediately.

First, Ava tried to pretend nothing had happened.She strode through the hallway like a woman on a mission: chin high, heels clicking, deadly serious.

Zach followed behind her, looking like he'd just been blessed by the divine. His tie was askew. His hair had Ava's fingerprints in it. He was smiling like an idiot.

Adelle peeked out from behind a curtain and hissed, "They're so bad at this."

Charles, hiding behind a conveniently placed potted fern, scribbled "Current Status: Denial" on his clipboard.

At breakfast the next morning, Ava sat at one end of the table, Zach at the other, pretending they didn't exist in each other's orbit.Ava sipped her coffee primly. Zach buttered his toast with intense focus.

No one spoke. No one dared.

Then Zach—traitor that he was—glanced up at her over the rim of his mug.

Their eyes met.

Ava immediately choked on her coffee.

Zach immediately grinned and bit into his toast like he had no regrets.
