Chapter 41 - Chapter 41: Learning and Training (Part 2)

Combusken was currently training its core strength inside the gravity chamber of Pewter City Gym's training facility.

"Increase your range of motion a bit more. Hold the final position for two seconds before lowering."

"Combusken!"

Struggling slightly, Combusken let out a sound in response and adjusted its movement accordingly.

"Finish five reps... then take a break. You've got... three more sets."

Silas was also training his own body, exercising in an area with slightly enhanced gravity while keeping an eye on Combusken's progress. His upper body was already drenched in sweat.

"Once Roggenrola evolves, I'll focus on refining its control over Gravity. That way, I can use it anytime for training, instead of relying on weighted gear, which has its limits."

Even as his body kept moving, Silas's mind remained active, constantly planning.

Glancing over at Roggenrola, which had finished replenishing its energy and was now practicing its moves, he spoke up.

"Roggenrola, you can wrap up your skill training in fifteen minutes. Don't overconsume your stored energy."

"Roggenrola!"

Roggenrola acknowledged the command.

Perhaps due to its Rock typing, it had a calm and steady temperament—completely unlike a Pokémon that had just matured past its infancy.

When Silas finished his final set, he stood up. By then, Combusken had already taken a seat nearby to rest.

Seeing its Trainer wrap up his workout, Combusken grabbed a towel from the side and handed it to him.

"Combusken, Combusken!"

"Thanks, Combusken." Silas took the towel and wiped the sweat from his upper body. "But I don't see what you're so proud of. Just because I finished after you? If anything, this proves you haven't trained hard enough still got energy left to think about stuff like that."

He shot Combusken an exasperated look.

Earlier, when handing over the towel, Combusken had taken a moment to smugly tease him for finishing his workout so slowly today.

Shaking his head, Silas thought about how unusual his Combusken was. It didn't have the short-tempered nature typical of most Fire-types. If he had to describe it, the best word would be... cheeky.

Fortunately, it was dedicated when it came to battles and training, so it never got too out of line.

"Rest up, then take the No.3 nutritional supplement. After that, do another round of core strength training. Stick to the usual weight load and gravity settings, then complete five sets of leg muscle training."

Silas gave his instructions.

"I'm heading to the wind tunnel to check on Pidgeot. Keep an eye on Roggenrola. Once it finishes its skill training, send it to the materials room to absorb 500g of No.3 rock."

"Combusken."

Combusken nodded.

"Combusken?"

"Yeah, after that, let it manage its internal energy circulation on its own, just like before. It's way less trouble than you—doesn't need constant reminders."

"Combusken!"

"Alright, alright, you win. Anyway, you're done resting, right? Drink your supplement and get back to training. Once you're finished, head to the energy chamber to work on your energy control."

Silas took a sip of water, then stood up. He ignored Combusken's exaggerated complaints about how careless his response was and made his way toward the wind tunnel to check on Pidgeot's progress.

Combusken downed the supplement in one gulp.

Honestly, aside from being somewhat good-looking, a decent cook, an excellent trainer, and a strong strategist, his Trainer really had no redeeming qualities.

This guy was definitely going to stay single forever he had no idea how to talk to people.

With a wordless sigh, Combusken got up and went back to training.

Being a Pokémon these days was just too hard.

"Achoo!"

Silas sneezed as he walked down the hall. Did I catch a chill right after training? Guess I should throw on a jacket.

Arriving at the wind tunnel chamber, he saw Pidgeot training inside.

Silas greeted the other Trainers resting nearby before stepping into the observation room adjacent to the wind tunnel.

The wind tunnel chamber was designed to simulate strong natural windstorms, allowing Flying-type Pokémon to train both their physical endurance and energy control.

Since Pewter Gym specialized in Rock-types, the wind tunnel here was relatively small. According to Brock, the facility was much larger in Gyms that focused on Flying-types—practically a central feature in those places.

The chamber was divided into several smaller sections. Most of the space was dedicated to training, while a portion was separated off for Trainers to observe.

A reinforced transparent glass panel separated the training area from the observation room. From here, Trainers could monitor and instruct their Pokémon through a built-in intercom system.

Watching Pidgeot fly against the wind, Silas nodded in approval. Looks like it isn't slacking off.

Pulling up Zero's data panel, he frowned slightly.

The higher a Pokémon's level, the slower its energy growth and the longer it took to level up.

It had been nearly a month since Pidgeot reached level 43, and it was still only at level 44.

At this rate, by the time the Indigo League rolled around, Pidgeot would likely be just over level 50.

Even so, despite the lack of level progression, its training had significantly improved its overall capabilities. Its physical attributes had strengthened, and its skill proficiency had risen considerably.

However, it was clear that Pidgeot struggled to increase the power and mastery of moves outside of its natural type.

Silas narrowed his eyes as he studied the panel, focusing on the move Heat Wave.

After Combusken mastered the move, Silas had it teach Pidgeot as well.

Yet, the progress between the two Pokémon was vastly different.

At first, neither of them could do more than generate a wave of hot air useful only for making opponents feel uncomfortable and draining stamina.

Over time, though, Combusken had improved to the point where its Heat Wave could actually inflict burns on other Pokémon.

Meanwhile, Pidgeot's Heat Wave had only increased slightly in power.

Heat Wave was considered a powerful Fire-type move, but, like all techniques, it required rigorous training. Most damaging moves weren't particularly impressive when first learned only status moves tended to be fully effective from the start.

Silas hadn't expected Pidgeot's Heat Wave to be a major offensive tool anyway. His goal was simply to expand its move pool, adding a bit of extra versatility.

Pidgeot's greatest progress had come in its aerial maneuverability and understanding of wind-based moves.

Though it still hadn't mastered Brave Bird or Sky Attack, it had unexpectedly made great strides in controlling Hurricane.

Most importantly, Pidgeot had finally met one of Silas's long-term expectations maintaining high-speed flight while continuously using Quick Attack, without losing flexibility.

Silas had long wanted Pidgeot to rely on sheer speed as its primary battle strategy, capitalizing on its natural strengths.

However, sustaining high-speed movement while consistently using Quick Attack placed immense demands on stamina and move control.

Previously, Pidgeot had been unable to meet this standard.

But through persistent training in the wind tunnel, it had gradually found the right rhythm to maintain speed.

By integrating Quick Attack into its movements, Pidgeot had pushed its speed to its current peak.

At the very least, it was now fast enough to ensure a clean getaway for Silas provided he took proper precautions. Otherwise, the sheer air pressure at those speeds could make the ride extremely unpleasant.

After watching for a while longer, Silas stepped up to the intercom and spoke.

"That's enough training for today, Pidgeot. You can rest now. I'll shut down the wind tunnel just be careful as it powers down."
