Chapter 4 - CHAPTER 4: SHADOWS BETWEEN US.

Haru looked up, resolute despite the tremors still thrumming beneath his skin. "I'll figure it out. Aqua said she'd guide me. I just... need time."

Kaede's gaze shifted to the scattered blueprints and schematics cluttering the room, ideas blooming behind her curious eyes as she considered the immediate threat.

"If the shadow Kaiju is targeting unclaimed Kaijus, we need to find the others before it does."

---

Elsewhere, a darkened room thrummed with energy, the walls lined with high-tech weaponry and gear. A cadre of Kaiju Hunters monitored the footage of the battle raging outside.

The leader—a stern figure, his face marred with a prominent scar—watched intently, assessing the events unfolding with cold calculation. "So another one's awakened, huh? Looks like we've got our work cut out for us."

A subordinate approached, eyes gleaming with anticipation. "Do we engage?"

The leader rubbed his chin thoughtfully, eyes narrowing as he assessed the potential threat. "Not yet. Let them think they're safe. For now, we watch."

As the screen flickered to static, the hunters began preparing their next move, the shadows of the room hiding their true intentions—silent, lurking, and waiting for the opportune moment to strike.

---

Later on,

The sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow across the walls of Ren's living room. A sense of relief lingered in the air, but the weight of recent events hung heavily on the group as they gathered around. The room, filled with a jumble of couches and scattered papers, set a casual yet serious tone for their meeting.

Mika reclined against the armrest, absently tossing small crumbs from a snack into her mouth. "So, we've got Haru's Kaiju, Aqua, on board now. That's progress, right?" Her voice was light, but her brow furrowed slightly at the thought of what lay ahead.

Ren nodded, his expression serious as he leaned forward, elbows resting on his knees. "Yeah, but that Shadow Kaiju showing up again… it's a problem. It's targeting unbonded Kaijus, and we're running out of time."

Mika crossed her arms defiantly. "We need to attack, rather than waiting to be attacked."

Kaede, seated a little apart from the others, glanced at them with thoughtful intensity. Her mind raced, contemplating the details that remained unsaid. "How, though? We don't even know where it's hiding."

Haru, who had remained unusually quiet throughout the conversation, finally spoke up. "Aqua told me something… the Shadow Kaiju might be drawn to powerful hosts. If we train, we might lure it out." His eyes carried a weighty resolve, but Kaede felt a shiver of unease. She remained silent, treading cautiously through a whirlwind of thoughts that suffocated her voice.

**Scene 2: Kaede's POV**

Day 1

**6:30 AM – Quiet Morning**

Kaede awoke without an alarm as dawn crept into her room, filling it with a soft, tranquil light. Everything in her space was neat and minimalistic—just the way she liked it. She stretched, shaking off the remnants of sleep, but something lingering in the air felt... off. A subtle tingling danced at her fingertips, a pulse of anticipation she couldn't pinpoint just yet. She dismissed the feeling for now; she had no kaiju in her, so what could it be?

**7:00 AM – Simple Breakfast**

Her breakfast was uncomplicated as always—toast, eggs, and some fruit. Kaede relished the calm, each bite methodically consumed in silence. As she ate, her thoughts drifted toward the day ahead: school, the group, training—the usual rhythm of her life. Yet, an acute awareness settled in her mind. Her instincts felt sharper. She noticed details she often overlooked—the gleam of sunlight on the windows, the distinct sounds of the neighborhood waking up.

**8:00 AM – Walk to School**

On her walk to school, Kaede sensed a strange lightness in the air, a hue of anticipation that nearly knocked her off balance. Passing familiar faces, she remained introspective, her mind a swirling storm of thoughts. When she spotted Ren and the others by the school gate, she offered only a brief nod—nothing more. Still, a feeling lingered, an inexplicable attraction that drew her closer to the aura he exuded. She swiftly quelled it, reminding herself of her boundaries.

**9:00 AM to 3:00 PM – School, But Not Really**

In class, Kaede's gaze was steady but distant. Though her body was physically present, her mind wandered, catching subtle energies in the room—the fluctuations in voices, the rising tension among her classmates. She was aware of Ren's gaze upon her a few times, but she quickly shut down those thoughts, reminding herself not to get lost in his world. The school day passed in a blur, and by the time the bell rang, she was already on her feet and out the door.

**After School – A Quiet Resolve**

Instead of going to the usual spots, Kaede sought solace in a quiet nook, where she could think without distractions. A tension brewed in her chest, an urgency that felt both familiar and unsettling. The feeling intensified, but she remained composed, the weight of patience solidified within her. She would wait—she always waited.

**Evening – A Moment of Reflection**

As night fell, Kaede settled by her desk, diligently finishing her homework. Clarity in her thoughts felt almost foreign; something deep within her had shifted. She sensed an inner potential that stirred quietly, like a dormant fire awakening from slumber. She closed her eyes, anxious yet hopeful, yearning for revelation.

---

**Day 2**

**6:30 AM – Morning Calm**

Kaede woke up again to the familiar quiet of the early morning. She took her time, relishing the solitude as she opened the curtains, allowing sunlight to flood her space. As she dressed, she noticed a faint buzz from her phone—a message from Ren reminding her of a team meeting later that evening about training. Her heart fluttered; a mixture of excitement and frustration bubbled just under her skin. She was tired of being on the outside looking in.

**7:15 AM – Light Breakfast**

Toast, eggs, miso soup—balanced and sharp. She dined while skimming through her favorite manga or watching the news. She felt an odd sensation creeping in from time to time: a subtle reaction whenever danger approached or when Ren's energy meter flared, like a gentle warning on the edge of constancy.

**8:10 AM – Walk to School**

Kaede walked alone, unconcerned with her solitary existence. As she approached the school, laughter echoed from Ren and the others. It hit her harder than usual, a sudden feeling of exclusion that gnawed at her edges. Their laughter sounded sweet but distant, as if she were watching from behind a glass pane.

When she caught the attention of the group, they greeted her warmly, but she kept her responses short—nothing more than a sarcastic quip or a simple nod.

**8:30 AM to 3:00 PM – School Mode**

Sitting in class, Kaede attempted to merge into her usual role: smart, stable, and observant—but during this session, she felt exposed. Ren's laughter occasionally broke through her concentration, not in a romantic way but as a reminder of the connection she lacked. Watching him navigate the dynamics of friendship, she felt an unsettling sense of separation from their camaraderie.

By the end of the day, as the final bell rang, a pang of heartache coursed through her, reminding her of the distance she felt.

**3:00 PM – Walking Home Alone**

Lost in thought on her way home, her phone buzzed again—it was another text from Ren about tomorrow's training session. Normally, she wouldn't let such things get to her, but that day it felt different. A sour taste lingered in her mouth, as though she was once again summoning strength to break from the shadows and join their light.

---

**Day 3: A Quiet Tension**

**6:30 AM – A Quiet Morning**

Kaede's early morning routine had become familiar and comforting. The soft light filtering into her room felt almost warm, but the usual tranquility had morphed into bones of restlessness. She barely registered a message from Ren informing her about another meeting, an order disguised as a friendly note.

**7:30 AM – A Normal School Morning**

During her commute, she noted the laughter ringing louder than before, unavoidable. She was struck by the joviality shared between Ren and the others. Despite the weight on her heart, she pressed on, the joy of their friendship being a canker in her mind.

**8:00 AM – The Same Routine**

School began, and Kaede slid into her seat, successfully shutting down the surging waves of envy. Her focus was torn between her notes and her own thoughts, fencing with the fact that she was still without a Kaiju, without the connecting force anchoring her to them.

**12:30 PM – Lunchtime, A Subtle Distance**

At lunch, Kaede sat on her own, a conscious choice encased in resignation. The laughter of her friends reverberated in waves from across the cafeteria. She watched them interact, absorbing their energy and humor like a sponge—each pun, each joke leaving her isolated.

**3:00 PM – Walking Home Alone**

The echo of footsteps was the only sound accompanying her home. Kaede's thoughts spun around loneliness, brewing an ever-tightening knot as each step brought her further from the warmth of friendship and camaraderie she felt lost within.

**5:00 PM – A Quiet Evening**

As night enveloped her home, Kaede sought refuge with a sketchbook. Ink flowed across the pages, forming random shapes of Kaiju—her dreams projected onto the paper. The reality of her solitude crashed over her once again, dissipating the moments of inspiration.

**7:00 PM – Reflections**

In the dim light of her room, Kaede sat by the window, staring out at the city lights twinkling in the distance. As the world moved outside her grasp, she pondered her uncertainty, waiting for something to change.

The sudden buzz of her phone snapped her from her stupor—a text from Ren: "If you change your mind about joining training, just let me know."

Kaede stared at the screen, mind racing. She was on the precipice of decision, yet something held her back.

---

**Day 4: The Rooftop**

**Location: A rooftop overlooking the city.**

Standing alone, Kaede gazed down at the bustling streets below. The skyline shimmered as the last hues of daylight melted into twilight.

**Kaede's Internal Monologue**

*"They're all so strong. Ren, Mika, even Haru... They've got their Kaijus, their powers. But me? I'm just here, watching from the sidelines, waiting for something to happen. I can't even be part of their training… I've got nothing."*

Her fingers curled around the cold railing, an exasperated sigh escaping her lips.

*"How can I help them? How can I even be useful if I'm not a part of all that?"*

Just then, a gentle breeze spiraled around her, lifting her hair and brushing against her skin. It was playful, mischievous. She froze, the air shifting around her.

???: "Why so glum? Feeling a little left out?"

Kaede whipped around, her heart pounding as a shimmering, ethereal figure emerged from the air—a Windy figure, gliding through the evening like a wisp of cloud.

Kaede stared, wide-eyed and breathless. *"W-Who... who are you?"*

Zephyr:(playfully) "Me? Oh, I'm Zephyr, your partner, the Kaiju monarch of the wind. If you'll have me, of course. I've been watching you. You've got potential, little one. You just need to stop holding yourself back so much."

Zephyr: (twirling in the air, her form flickering like a playful gust) "And then again, I'm your friend, if you will allow me say that. Your memories are flowing in and you've always been so caught up in that 'I'm not enough' mindset! But I see you. I think you're ready."

Kaede fumbled for words, her mind racing with disbelief. *"But… I don't have a Kaiju... I don't—"*

Zephyr: (light laughter) "Excuse me? I just told you I'm your partner! You think your Kaiju has to be a big, loud beast? It's not about size or power. It's about connection. If you let go of those doubts, you could unleash so much more!"

For a second, Kaede hesitated, but hope flickered in her heart, warming her.

*"Why me?" Kaede whispered.*

Zephyr: "Because, little one, you're just like me—waiting for the wind to lift you up. Just be willing to catch the breeze. We'll find our way, together."

With that, the wind surged, lifting her spirits as Zephyr's form faded into the evening. Kaede lingered, alone yet filled with a new sense of purpose—a flicker of hope ignited within her spirit.

---

**Scene 3: The Awakening**

**Location: The group's base (Ren's mother's room).**

The air buzzed with energy as the group assembled to chill. Haru and Mika were busy matching their Kaijus' powers together through a meter, the space electric with potential. Kaede stepped inside, her demeanor radiating confidence as she gathered her thoughts, ready to share the news of her awakening.

Mika: (smirking) "You look like you've got something to say."

Kaede: (smiling) "Maybe I do."

Haru, barely able to contain his astonishment, wide-eyed with realization, broke in. "Ugh, THIS READING, IT'S A HIGH-LEVEL KAIJU!"**

Haru: "AND IT'S RIGHT—here?"

A sudden gust of wind rushed through the room, swirling like a fresh spring breeze, and Zephyr materialized with the grace of a flitting leaf.

Ren: (shocked) "Wait… another Kaiju?!"

Mika: (surprised) "You've got to be kidding me."

Haru: (genuinely impressed) "So you're a Host now too… wow!"

???: "It was about time! It'd be pathetic if she didn't have one."

???: "Three elemental monarchs in one team would be a pain"

Ren (worried): "You are right, the different in personality is evident and their personal ego too"

Ren (inwardly): "...and what do you mean three, including this new one, it should be four right ?"

??? (stern):** "You wouldn't understand"

**Scene 4: Infernia and Aqua Welcome Zephyr**

Infernia stood amidst a set of glowing monitors, her fiery hair dancing in the air as she turned to greet Zephyr. There was an almost instant spark of energy between them.

Infernia: (grinning widely, flames flickering at her fingertips) "Well, well, well… look who decided to show up."

Aqua, calm and steady, sidled up beside Infernia, her own aura glowing with deep blue serenity. She regarded Zephyr with curiosity brimming in her eyes.

Aqua: (smiling softly) "She finally made it."

With the grace of a breeze, Zephyr glided into the room, emanating a playful energy that enveloped the entirety of the lab. She floated effortlessly between her new companions.

Zephyr: (with a playful wink) "Am I late, or did I just make the entrance of the century?"

Infernia: (crossing her arms, a mischievous grin on her lips) "You're definitely late, but it's alright. We've been waiting for someone like you." She scrutinized Zephyr with an impressed glance. "Though I expected something… more solid, you know? Like me." She gestured at her own arm, flames dancing playfully.

???: (in Ren's subconsciousness) "Cocky"

Aqua: (tilting her head, welcoming) "You're not late at all, Zephyr. We've just been waiting for you."

Zephyr floated into the space between them, carefree and effervescent, the soft laughter in her voice swirling within the room.

Zephyr: "Infernia! I love your energy! No one could match your fire. And Aqua… your calmness is like a soothing river. I think we'll get along just fine."

Infernia raised an eyebrow, the teasing smirk on her face radiating curiosity.

Infernia: "Oh, I'll show you the real fire when we train. But if you can keep up with me—maybe you'll fit in just fine."

Zephyr: (with a teasing grin) "Fire? We'll see how long it lasts when the wind starts blowing."

Aqua chuckled softly, gauging the chemistry amongst them.

Aqua: "It's a pleasure to have you here, Zephyr. I think you'll bring something special to our team."

With a mock bow, Zephyr responded with fluid grace, her form shimmering with energy.

Zephyr: "The pleasure's all mine! I'm here to shake things up a little. Let's see how our hosts fare!"

Kaede stepped forward, summoning a sleek wind-glaive weapon that felt spirited in her grip.

Zephyr: "Let's see how you handle yourself, shall we?"

---

**Scene 5: A Test of Strength**

**Location: An abandoned Town unit.**

The area buzzed with anticipation as Kaede faced off against Ren in a sparring match.

Kaede's movements were sharp and evasive. Utilizing her glaives, she whirled and created gusts of wind that sent Ren off balance. Her confidence soared, clarity weaving through her motions. Each strike felt purposeful, alive with Zephyr's whispers echoing encouragement.

Ren: (initially taken aback, he quickly adapted) "Whoa, you're faster than I expected!"

Ren channelled speed through his lightning, dodging and countering her strikes, laughter and sweat mixing as they engaged in friendly competition.

Kaede: (smirking) "You haven't seen anything yet."

Their exchange culminated in a stalemate as both panted from exertion, a new bond of respect unveiling itself.

Ren: (grinning widely) "Not bad for your first time."

**Kaede:** (smirking) "I guess I had a good teacher."

Mika: (teasing) "Don't let it get to your head, Ren!"

Laughter filled the air, a sound of camaraderie echoing in the lab, as the team solidified their connection.

---

**Scene 6: The Shadow's Move**

**Location: A dark, desolate area.**

The bleakness of the environment contrasted sharply with the burgeoning hope in Kaede's heart. The Shadow Kaiju loomed menacingly over the remnants of a defeated Kaiju, shrouded in darkness.

Shadow Kaiju: "The Monarch Hosts are gathering… but they're still weak. Soon, they'll all fall before me."

The menacing words echoed ominously against the backdrop of the darkened world, foreshadowing the rumbling conflict that lay ahead.

The screen faded to black as the Shadow Kaiju released a chilling laugh, the world shifting further into the unknown.
