Chapter 36 - Chapter 36: Learning from the Draw

Victor Kane paced the sidelines as the second half began, his arms crossed tightly across his chest. Burton Albion had managed to hold their own against Oxford United, but the match was far from over. Halftime adjustments had given the players a clearer focus, but Victor knew one thing for certain—Oxford wouldn't stop adapting.

The referee's whistle echoed across the stadium. The second half was underway.

Burton pressed hard in the opening minutes, pushing Oxford's defenders back and creating space in the midfield. Harper latched onto Silva's pass, darting toward the box, but Oxford's center-back slid in with a perfectly timed tackle, denying the chance.

Victor muttered under his breath. The players were improving, but Oxford's experience kept the balance shifting.

The Snake Tactics System flickered in his mind's eye, adjusting predictions based on live match data.

Second-Half Tactical Projections:

Burton Albion Formation Efficiency: 51%

Opponent Tactical Response: High-pressure counter attacks and defensive overloads.

The increase in Burton's efficiency was incremental, but it was progress. Players were starting to adapt to the system's expectations, even if perfection remained elusive.

Minutes ticked by, and Burton took control. Silva received a crisp pass from Marco, turned quickly, and threaded it through to Ellis on the wing. Ellis didn't hesitate—his volley flew past the keeper, kissing the top corner of the net.

2-1 Burton.

Cheers erupted from the stands, the fans roaring in approval. At The Yellow Lion Pub, Martin practically spilled his drink, yelling, "Ellis! You beauty!"

Back on the pitch, Victor allowed himself a slight smile. Burton's coordination had improved—not flawless, but better.

Still, he knew Oxford wasn't finished.

Oxford retaliated in the 78th minute. They exploited the left flank, overloading Burton's defensive setup and forcing Caldwell into a desperate clearance that landed directly at the feet of their striker. A quick cutback, a sharp finish, and Oxford was level again.

2-2.

Victor's jaw tightened. Burton had anticipated the press—but the overload had been too precise. On the sidelines, Holly was furiously scribbling notes.

"They shifted into a hybrid pressing structure," she said, adjusting her glasses. "Your current defensive transitions aren't fast enough to counter the overload."

Victor glanced at her notes, then back at the pitch. Holly was right—though the Snake Tactics System had already flagged the defensive weakness earlier in the match. Burton's efficiency wasn't the issue. Execution under pressure was.

The final ten minutes were a test of grit. Harper pushed forward aggressively, Silva controlled the midfield expertly, and Caldwell anchored the defense like a fortress.

Victor barked orders, adjusting the formation live to counter Oxford's relentless attacks. Burton held firm, refusing to let the game slip away.

When the whistle blew for full time, the scoreboard remained 2-2.

Victor stood quietly on the sidelines as the players filtered off the pitch. The fans were lively, some cheering, others discussing what they had just witnessed. At The Yellow Lion Pub, the debates were just as animated.

"Harper's goal was sharp," Martin said, gesturing wildly. "And Ellis? Brilliant volley!"

"Yeah, but the defense still has holes," Gary replied. "We need Caldwell to tighten up"

Victor gathered the players in the dressing room, his expression calm but firm. Harper sat next to Silva, both looking exhausted but determined. Caldwell leaned back against the wall, catching his breath.

"Good work out there," Victor began. "You held your own against a stronger team. That's progress. But don't get comfortable. We're not finished improving."

He paused, letting his words sink in. "Harper, Silva—keep pushing forward. Ellis, keep that confidence in your finishing. Caldwell, the defense needs to adjust faster under pressure."

The players nodded, murmurs of agreement spreading across the room.

Victor turned to Marco and Ellis. "Your passing tempo is improving, but your decision-making needs to be sharper. Oxford exploited every hesitation."

Later, in his office, Victor pulled up the system interface for post-match analysis.

Match Summary:

Burton Albion Formation Efficiency: Final 53%

Key Strengths:

 Improved coordination in midfield transitions.

 Effective attacking movements on wings.

Key Weaknesses:

 Defensive transitions under overload pressure.

 Positional awareness during high-pressure scenarios.

Victor leaned back in his chair, exhaling slowly. Burton had improved—significantly—but there were still gaps to fill. He knew progress wouldn't be overnight, but the foundation was solid.

Holly walked in, placing her updated report on his desk. "Defensive recoveries improved by 8%, and attacking tempo was 12% faster in the second half," she said, adjusting her glasses.

Victor glanced at her report, then nodded. "Keep tracking the data. We'll refine it further in training."

Back on the pitch the next morning, Victor stood with his coaching staff as the squad began light drills. The players were energized despite the grueling schedule, and laughter echoed across the field.

Silva stretched alongside Harper, muttering, "Think Victor's ever going to let up?"

"Not a chance," Harper replied with a grin.

Caldwell jogged past them, shaking his head. "Better this than losing."

Victor watched them silently, a small smirk tugging at his lips.
