Chapter 16: Legacy Rewritten
Days had passed since the battle with the First Memory, yet the Citadel thrummed with lingering energy. The Origin now pulsed more gently, like a heart no longer under siege.
But Kazuki couldn't sleep.
Every night, he dreamed of a flame—silent, blue, endless. It called to him through time and space, threading through the tapestry of his soul.
Aria watched him from their balcony, Lyra sleeping peacefully in her arms. "You're not done, are you?"
"No," he replied. "Something's missing."
Zeren had sensed it too. The day after the trials, he brought Kazuki an ancient scroll bound in starlight silk. "There's a weapon," Zeren said. "Not forged in this world, but in the Soulfire Depths—where fate itself folds."
---
The Journey to the Depths
Kazuki, Kael, and Zeren descended through forgotten chambers beneath the Citadel. Each step down into the Soulfire Depths distorted time—memories flickering at the edges of reality.
They passed through rooms where lost emotions wandered like ghosts. One chamber contained thousands of versions of Kazuki—each defined by a choice he never made.
In another, time stood still. They walked for hours but found themselves in the same place, forced to relive a moment of heartbreak again and again until they let go. It wasn't just a test of strength—it was a test of identity.
Zeren paused before a mural carved into obsidian, depicting the original wielders of the soulbound weapons. "They were not just warriors," he murmured, "they were memories incarnate."
At the final gate, they faced the Guardian of Echoes: a dragon-shaped entity made of burning script. It asked only one question: "What are you willing to give up for your soul's truth?"
Kazuki answered without hesitation. "Everything… except who I am."
The dragon bowed, dissolving into threads of memory.

The Soulbound Weapon
At the chamber's heart floated a blade—not metal, but living flame, forged of spirit, memory, and infinite potential. The hilt shimmered with Kazuki's childhood laughter. The blade itself flickered with every moment he'd protected someone.
As he reached for it, the chamber responded. Visions overwhelmed him:
Aria singing under a blood-red sky.
Lyra cradling a world in her tiny hands.
Kael standing against an army alone.
The blade accepted him.
Its name burned into his heart: Aetherion—the Flame of Soul's Will.
It sang in his mind. Not in words, but in feelings. It remembered every person Kazuki had saved—and every soul he'd failed.
When he lifted it, flames danced across his skin, but didn't burn. They welcomed him. Kazuki's aura exploded, reshaping his power into something primal.
Zeren stepped back in awe. "That weapon isn't just alive… it is you."
As they ascended back toward the Citadel, Kazuki found the weight of Aetherion unlike anything he'd carried before. It was light as a feather in his grip, but the memories embedded in it bore unimaginable depth. Each swing whispered a name, a place, a feeling he had once known.
"Does it hurt?" Kael asked quietly as they walked.
"No," Kazuki replied after a long pause. "It feels like… home."

Return and Revelation
When Kazuki returned to Aria, Aetherion hummed softly. The moment Aria touched his shoulder, the flame grew brighter.
"It recognizes her," Kazuki whispered.
"She's part of your soul," Zeren said. "Of course it does."
But something strange happened: the flame split. A second blade, lighter, softer, drifted toward Aria. It accepted her, shaping into a songblade of light and melody.
Together, they formed a dual harmony—Soulfire Bond.
In that instant, Kazuki and Aria shared not just a connection of hearts, but one of souls. Their memories interlaced, creating an aura that shone like a constellation. Lyra watched, eyes wide, recognizing the magic that was being woven before her.
"Papa… Mama… you're glowing," she whispered.
Kazuki turned toward her with a smile. "We've always been glowing. Just… not everyone could see it."
Zeren stepped forward. "You've formed a rare link. Soulfire Bond is a resonance not seen in over a thousand cycles. It only appears when two souls are destined not just to meet—but to protect all of existence together."
"Then we'll protect it," Aria said, voice resolute. "All of it."
Suddenly, Lyra cried out. Her eyes shimmered with a vision. "A storm is coming… and it wants to destroy even your memories, Papa."
From the stars above, a tear formed in the sky.
A new enemy had sensed the awakening of Aetherion—and it was already descending.

The Vision Beyond the Tear
That night, Kazuki found himself alone, drawn into a dream that felt too vivid to ignore. He stood before the tear in the sky, now larger, pulsing with unnatural energy. From it emerged a figure cloaked in flowing shadows, eyes glowing with the light of devoured worlds.
"I am Nihileth," it spoke, "Devourer of Time, Warden of Forgotten Fates."
Kazuki held Aetherion tightly. "I've faced echoes and memories. What are you?"
"I am the absence of memory. The silence after the last song. I am what remains when love dies, when flame fades, when names are no longer spoken."
In an instant, Kazuki was hurled backward through scenes of forgotten lives—worlds where he failed, where Aria perished, where Lyra never existed. He screamed but no sound came. Only Aetherion's light guided him back.
"You will lose everything, Soulbearer," Nihileth hissed. "And I will feast on your despair."
Kazuki awoke in a cold sweat, Aria clutching his hand. "I felt it too," she whispered. "We're being watched."
Kazuki stared out the window, eyes narrowing. "Then let it watch. When it comes for us, we'll be ready."
He turned to Aetherion and whispered, "We were made for this."
