Chapter 35: The Truth Beneath the Surface
The morning after the picnic, the group of friends returned to school, their spirits still high from the previous day's fun. But as the day went on, there was an undercurrent of tension that none of them could shake off. It wasn't obvious to everyone—just to Naoto and Rika. Something was off, but neither of them could pinpoint exactly what it was. The weight of their thoughts seemed heavier than usual.

A Quiet Moment
After school, Naoto found himself walking beside Rika on their way home. The others had scattered, each with their own plans, but the two of them had a rare, quiet moment to themselves.
Rika kept her eyes on the path ahead, trying not to make it obvious how much her heart was racing. "So…," she started, her voice hesitant. "What's been bothering you today?"
Naoto looked at her, surprised by her sudden question. "What do you mean?"
"You've been quiet," she pointed out. "You haven't joked around like usual, and you've been looking like you have something on your mind."
Naoto slowed his pace, trying to find the right words. "It's nothing, really." He paused, then added, "But I've been thinking about something… about yesterday."
"Yesterday?" Rika echoed. "The picnic?"
Naoto nodded. "Yeah. It was fun, but I noticed something. Something I hadn't noticed before."
Rika's heart skipped a beat. "What do you mean?"
"I think we're all growing closer," Naoto said quietly, glancing at her. "It's not just the laughs and the jokes. It's… deeper than that. I can feel it. But the thing is, I don't know how I should handle it."
Rika's breath caught in her throat. "You're saying... we're getting closer to each other, right?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly.
"Yeah," Naoto replied. "It's strange. I've always been distant, but now, it's like... I'm beginning to feel like I can be part of something again."
Rika looked down at the ground, unable to hide the sudden rush of emotions that swirled inside her. "And what if you're afraid of getting too close?" she asked softly, her words hanging in the air between them.
Naoto stopped walking, turning to face her. He wasn't sure what had possessed him, but he suddenly found himself standing there, looking directly into her eyes. "Why would I be afraid?" he asked, his voice more serious now. "Afraid of what, exactly?"
Rika blinked, trying to fight the growing lump in her throat. "Of getting attached," she said, almost in a whisper.
Naoto's expression softened, and he looked at her, almost as if he were seeing her for the first time in this new light. "Rika..." he started, then stopped. There was something in his chest, a twinge of uncertainty. But he didn't want to hold back anymore. "I've been attached for a while now."
---
Rika's Inner Turmoil
Rika didn't know how to respond to that. The weight of his words pressed down on her, making it harder for her to breathe. "But… I can't…" she trailed off, unsure of what she wanted to say.
Naoto could sense her hesitation. "You can't what?"
Rika took a deep breath and turned her face away, her heart pounding. She didn't want to admit it—didn't want to let her feelings slip just yet. "I can't just… open up to you like this," she said, her voice small. "It's too complicated. I can't pretend everything's fine when it isn't."
Naoto looked at her, a flicker of understanding in his eyes. "I know it's not easy," he said gently. "But maybe we don't need to pretend. Maybe we can just be real with each other."
Rika's thoughts swirled as she wrestled with her own emotions. How could she be real with him when her feelings were so complicated? How could she admit that, despite everything, she wanted to be closer to him, but felt like she couldn't?
She sighed, her voice cracking slightly. "I just don't know how to feel anymore."
Naoto stepped closer to her, his voice low. "Rika... Whatever you're feeling, I'll be here. You don't have to figure it out alone."
---
The Moment of Truth
Rika hesitated, then took a step back, as if to distance herself from the moment. But it was too late—her emotions had already spilled out. She had felt it too—the connection, the pull toward him that she couldn't deny anymore.
"I'm sorry," she whispered, her voice barely audible.
Naoto shook his head. "You don't have to apologize. We're friends, right?" He smiled softly, trying to ease her tension. "We'll figure this out, even if it's slow. It doesn't have to be all at once."
Rika smiled faintly, grateful for his understanding. "Yeah… Friends."
It felt like a small step forward, yet the uncertainty lingered, neither of them sure where this new, fragile connection would take them.
