Chapter 33 - Chapter 33: Crisis

Cail finally experienced the tough physique of the void users. Despite losing this much blood, he was still conscious.

Jael finally managed to gain some energy and propose to walk by himself. Cail looked like he was in a daze while he walked, but his mind wasn't on the pain, but something else.

''Jael is a liability,''he concluded. Jael knew that something was wrong with him, but was very scared to confront it. ''Of course, if it was possession, he was not just a liability but a ticking time bomb.''

He couldn't kill Jael... At least not now.

''The Godfather told me to protect Jael from danger, but if it's possession, then he's probably not Jael anymore? Killing him could count as saving him,'' Cail thought maliciously.

''But... he seemed to be human as of now.''

Cail had a plan: if Jael turned into something... he'd be the one to stick a bullet in his head.

He looked back and saw the pale and shivering Jael.

Cail clicked his tongue. "He looks so harmless. What a shame."

This was his first time experiencing this. It seemed to be interesting enough.

First, let's stay close to Jael for now. Then, let's find an abandoned warehouse to lock him in case he lost control and turns into something, but before that, he'll buy something like handcuffs or any restraining device. He could also include some euthanization device if needed.

But as for now, let's first make sure that he is no longer Jael. He will proceed with his plan if it was possession.

It was unknown what Cail was feeling, but for the first time, he felt a mix of excitement and rage. He knew the source of excitement, but he didn't know where the rage and that bit of unfamiliar emotion were coming from.

The moment he saw the thing flickering inside Jael, Cail felt a strange sense of terror. It wasn't a fear of the thing inside but the fear of losing something... It was a novel feeling, but he wasn't about to let himself be distracted with that bit of tenderness. If Jael turned into something else, that creature inside better be ready to face the consequences.

"Why am I even bringing you here?" Cail smacked his forehead. "Do you want to go with me or stay here and wait for the police?"

Jael snapped out of his daze. He looked at Cail and seemed to have made a decision. "I'll stay here."

Cail looked at him.

This time Jael didn't flinch. He rushed towards Cail and hugged him. He said, "I know that the world my father introduced to you is hell, but I just want you to know. I'm very grateful to you for protecting me since we were young." Then he looked at Cail firmly. "I know you don't trust people, but this time, let me handle it."

Cail still didn't say anything. Jael walked back. As Cail gazed at his back disappearing into the woods, he touched his chest. He seemed to feel something again. It was warm.

Actually, he just realized that he seemed to have taken more risk tonight. His identity could be revealed once Jael says something...

But of course, he came back to his senses fast. He looked at Jael. There was a bright grey light with a hint of gold on his head and red veins spreading into his body and wrapping into his heart like a chain that was holding something.

He didn't know about that red stuff but he knew the bright grey with a hint of gold on Jael's head.

"Once he says something. That'll go boom," he thought darkly. Trust? That's something that he couldn't afford to do for now. That technique (trigger in Jael's brain) cost him a lot of void energy to the point that he was almost collapsing.

He looked at the red veins wrapped in Jael's heart.

"Tick, tock, tick. I hope you blow before I get bored," he smirked. Fate seemed to love giving him trouble. But wasn't there a quote? When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. This time, he's finding the bright side of this mess and that bright side is entertainment.

Oh my, I'm a very optimistic person!

...

Jael was sitting inside the ambulance. He was wrapped in a cozy blanket, drinking warm water, looking pretty traumatized.

His house was blown off. He had no place to stay. One of the officers offered him a place; Jael shook his head. "I can just stay at my friend's house."

It was a total mess. Debris, the police sirens, and the mutilated dead bodies everywhere.

Mr. Quill was standing nearby with his arms crossed. Auren was standing beside him acting like an obedient student.

The two of them weren't saying anything, just observing the situation.

One of the older police officers walked towards Jael and asked him bluntly, "Did someone help you?"

Jael shook his head. "I don't know. I fainted and woke up in the woods. Someone probably helped me, but I'm not sure."

The police wasn't buying it. "Of course someone helped you. The cultist head had some bullet holes on it." He looked at Jael with an oppressive look. "Whoever is playing the hero, tell me. Them being able to kill this many people means that they are a psychopath, a danger to society."

"So you want people to rely on police?" The normally quiet Jael snapped. "You guys are pretty useless. Without that person's help, I'd probably be dead by now."

The policeman smiled. "Yow, a little porcupine. Was the person who saved you close to you? You're getting a bit defensive."

Jael's heart dropped a bit, this police was toying with him, but he still had his composed look. He glared at the police officer. "No, I already said I don't know. You're deflecting the issue by accusing me of being defensive. Of course I'd be defensive to my savior." Then he sneered. "If y'all came here early, you guys would probably be the ones receiving this treatment."

Mr. Quill, on the side, looked at Jael. He could sense something was wrong. He sent an eye signal at Auren, 'He's lying.'

He walked towards the policeman and patted his shoulder. His face was different from before, so Jael didn't recognize him as Mr. Thade.

"Hahahahahah. Don't be that tough on a victim. Kid, don't worry. Ygen is just a bit serious." He smiled, looking very friendly. Too friendly.

"Why don't you let me talk to this kid? I'm good at this." He jumped into the ambulance and sat beside Jael.

Jael flinched. He looked very uncomfortable. Actually, when talking to the police, he tried to copy Cail's attitude in order to keep up a tough front. But seeing this man, he could feel that this guy was harder to deal with than the police.

Mr. Quill smiled. His left hand fiddling with the ring. His eyes glowed purple and a faint mist that wasn't visible to the human eyes emerged and covered the entire surroundings.

"So tell me, who did you meet?"
