Chapter 93 - A Plea for reason

(Opening Scene: The tension in the council chamber is palpable. Prince Lysander's royal command hangs heavy in the air, met by Headmaster Theron's unwavering disapproval.)

"Prince Lysander," Headmaster Theron said, his voice firm despite the royal decree. "While I respect the authority of the crown, I must strongly advise against this duel. As I stated, Lumina Academy is not the appropriate venue for such personal conflicts. Furthermore, Zane's abilities are still largely unknown and unpredictable, even to himself. A duel under these circumstances would be reckless and potentially dangerous for both participants."

Prince Lysander scoffed, his gaze never leaving Zane. "Reckless? Only for him. I am a trained combat mage of noble lineage. This… void mage… appears to be a novice with a dangerous fluke of power. A quick demonstration of his inferiority will settle this matter and reassure everyone of Astrid's safety."

Astrid stepped forward, her voice pleading. "Lysander, please. This is unnecessary. What happened was an accident. Zane is not a threat."

Prince Lysander finally turned his attention to her, a condescending smile on his lips. "My dear Astrid, your judgment is clearly clouded by… whatever strange influence this boy holds over you. As your future husband, it is my duty to ensure your well-being and protect your honor."

Lady Elara Montaigne observed the exchange with a shrewd gaze, her loyalties clearly divided between her niece's happiness and the political implications of defying a royal prince. The Montaigne guard captain remained impassive, awaiting his orders.

Headmaster Theron pressed on, his voice earnest. "Prince Lysander, I implore you to reconsider. We are actively investigating Zane's abilities. A duel now would provide no meaningful insight and could lead to unforeseen consequences. Allow us to understand the nature of his magic in a controlled environment. Forcing a confrontation based on assumptions and perceived threats is unwise."

Prince Lysander remained unmoved, his entitlement unwavering. "My command stands, Headmaster. I will not have the future Queen of Eldoria associated with such unpredictable and potentially dangerous individuals. The duel will proceed. I expect the academy to provide a suitable dueling ground and ensure fair… if swift… proceedings." He cast another disdainful look at Zane. "Be ready, void mage. You will soon learn your place."

Headmaster Theron sighed, the weight of the royal command and the prince's arrogance leaving him with few options. He knew defying a direct royal order could have serious repercussions for the academy. However, he remained deeply concerned about the potential for disaster given the volatile nature of Zane's powers and the prince's dismissive attitude.

"Very well, Prince Lysander," Headmaster Theron conceded reluctantly. "But I must reiterate my warnings. The academy will provide a dueling ground, but I will not condone recklessness. I will oversee the duel personally, and I reserve the right to intervene should the situation become unduly dangerous." His gaze hardened as he looked at Zane. "Zane, be cautious. Your abilities are still a mystery. Do not underestimate your opponent, nor overestimate your control."

The stage was set. Despite the headmaster's warnings and Astrid's pleas, Prince Lysander's royal command had forced a confrontation, a duel born of arrogance and fueled by misunderstanding.
