Chapter 99 - The Headmaster's Inquiry

(Opening Scene: Headmaster Theron sits behind his large oak desk, the atmosphere in his office serious but not overtly hostile. Lady Elara Montaigne and Prince Lysander are absent, likely being attended to elsewhere. Zane and Astrid stand before him, still holding hands, a silent testament to their connection.)

Headmaster Theron observed them for a moment, his gaze thoughtful. He cleared his throat softly. "Thank you for coming. I trust Prince Lysander's injuries are not severe?"

"He will recover, Headmaster," Astrid replied, her tone cool.

Headmaster Theron nodded. "Good. Now, Master Zane, your display of power during the duel was… unexpected. The focused manipulation of the Null Blade shards was a significant departure from what we have previously witnessed. Can you explain how you were able to control them in such a precise manner?"

Zane hesitated, trying to articulate the instinctive nature of his abilities. "It… it wasn't a conscious effort, Headmaster. When the prince attacked, I reacted. The blade shattered, and I… I just willed the pieces to protect me, to stop him without causing lasting harm."

"Willed?" Headmaster Theron pressed gently. "Or was it, perhaps, a subconscious manifestation of your protective instincts, similar to the negation of magic when Lady Astrid was in danger?"

Zane considered this. "Perhaps a combination of both, Headmaster. The desire to defend myself, but also a… a feeling of control over the void energy, a sense of it responding to my intent more readily than before."

Headmaster Theron steepled his fingers, his gaze shifting to their joined hands. "And then there is this… evident connection between the two of you. Lady Astrid, your family has made certain… arrangements for your future."

Astrid's grip on Zane's hand tightened slightly. "My feelings for Zane are my own, Headmaster. My betrothal is a matter of political expediency, not personal choice."

Lady Elara Montaigne chose that moment to re-enter the office, her expression unreadable. Prince Lysander was not with her. "Headmaster," she said, her voice coolly polite. "I trust you are addressing the… complexities of this situation." Her gaze flickered pointedly at Zane and Astrid's hands.

"Indeed, Lady Elara," Headmaster Theron replied calmly. "We are exploring the… unique dynamics at play." He turned back to Zane and Astrid. "The academy values the well-being and personal growth of all its students. However, we must also be mindful of external factors and established societal structures."

He sighed softly. "Your connection is evident, but it presents… challenges, given Lady Astrid's pre-arranged future. This is a delicate matter, and one that requires careful consideration."

The chapter ends with the weight of Headmaster Theron's words hanging in the air, the unspoken conflict between personal feelings and societal expectations creating a palpable tension in the room. Lady Elara's watchful presence served as a stark reminder of the external forces that threatened to pull Zane and Astrid .
