Chapter 7 - Clash above the clouds

Lightning forked across the storm-darkened sky as Kaelen and Liora raced along the floating causeway toward the relic's resting place. The air was thick with tension, every gust laced with the scent of ozone and the promise of battle. Behind them, the Skyward Citadel's bells tolled—a warning to all of Aetheria that the Shadow's forces had breached the realm.

A shadowy figure materialized from the swirling mist ahead, cloaked in darkness that seemed to drink in the light. Lord Obsidian, the Shadow Realm's most feared emissary, blocked their path. His eyes glinted with malice.

"You're too late," he sneered, raising a hand wreathed in black flame. "The relic will belong to the Shadow."

Kaelen's heart pounded. He drew his sword, its blade flickering with fire and air, and planted his feet. Liora summoned a torrent of water, weaving it into a shimmering shield. The wind howled around them, carrying the cries of distant Skyward Sages locked in their own desperate battles.

Obsidian struck first, hurling a bolt of shadow that shattered against Liora's barrier. Kaelen lunged, blade meeting Obsidian's shadow-forged scythe in a shower of sparks. The force of the impact sent both combatants skidding across the slick stone.

Liora darted forward, launching spears of water that twisted through the air, but Obsidian's shadows coiled and swallowed them whole. He countered with a wave of darkness that threatened to engulf them both.

Kaelen gritted his teeth, feeling the heat of the fire shard surge through his veins. With a cry, he unleashed a burst of flames that cut through the darkness, forcing Obsidian back. Liora seized the moment, channeling the winds to lift Kaelen high above the battlefield.

From above, Kaelen saw the relic—a crystal orb pulsing with elemental energy—perched atop a spire. Obsidian lunged, but Liora's magic held him at bay for a heartbeat longer. Kaelen landed beside the relic, grasping it as its power surged through him.

Obsidian roared, shadows writhing in fury, but the combined force of fire, water, and air repelled him. With a final, desperate strike, he vanished into the storm, leaving only a trail of darkness behind.

Breathing hard, Kaelen and Liora exchanged a look of hard-won triumph. The relic was theirs—for now. But the storm still raged, and the war for the Shattered Realms was far from over.
