Chapter 20 - [20] Ally

"Congrats, Tengen! You're officially a Konoha genin!" Obito rushed to Tengen with a beaming.

"Obito, Kakashi, Rin." Tengen greeted the trio.

"Call me Obito-senpai!" Obito insisted.

Tengen ignored him. "Let's watch the matches."

Obito's forehead twitched. "Tengen, let's duel!"

"Just burned through my chakra." Tengen shrugged.

"Tomorrow, then."

"Tomorrow, my destiny's telling me to hold off."

"Day after?"

"You're a chunin picking on a genin. Got no shame?"

"Plenty of shame." Obito grinned.

"Ugh." Tengen stepped away. "Kakashi, I admire how you put up with him."

"Hm." Kakashi nodded, a rare glint of agreement in his eyes.

Some time later, the academy's combat exams concluded. Hiruzen and the others departed, and the passing students returned to the academy.

They'd receive their Konoha headbands and learn their post-graduation assignments.

Obito, Kakashi, and Rin got a mission summons from Minato and left to join him, with the ninja world feeling the stirrings of unrest.

Outside Konoha's gates, Anko clutched her headband. "Look, Tengen, my headband! I'm a real ninja now, even if just a genin. I'll keep pushing!"

"Yeah, yeah, Anko, you've said that a million times." Tengen said, bored. "We've got assignments tomorrow. Head home."

"Wonder who our sensei will be." Anko mused.

The graduates hadn't been given specific details, suggesting Konoha was still finalizing team placements.

"See you tomorrow." Anko is waving goodbye.

After parting, Tengen's system pinged. The map showed a treasure chest in Konoha, only an ordinary one.

"Even a small mosquito's still meat." Tengen is heading to the location. "If I'm right, it's near my usual training ground."

Sure enough, he arrived at the training field. "Here it is."

Standing in the signal's range, Tengen began downloading the ordinary video signal. It completed quickly, uninterrupted.

Well, almost.

"Tengen! Heard you graduated today. How about a match?" Guy appeared, flashing his dazzling white teeth.

"Hey, Guy." Tengen said. "I'm drained from the combat exam. Go find Kakashi."

"Fair point." Guy nodded, then vanished, likely off to hunt for Kakashi.

"Except Kakashi's on a mission." Tengen scratched his head, shrugging. Guy would train alone if he couldn't find him.

"Time to check this out." Tengen is leaving the training ground for a forest near Konoha.

He opened the system's video.

"What's this?" Tengen stared at the title.

"Pokémon video." He intrigued. The Pokémon world was formidable; creatures like Dragonite or legendary beasts like Mew were incredible.

But Tengen knew an ordinary video wouldn't yield top-tier rewards. Getting something amazing would take insane luck, like being blessed by RNGod itself.

Shaking his head, Tengen extracted the video.

[Ding! Obtained Poké Ball.]

Tengen stared at the ball in his hand, dumbfounded. "What's this supposed to do? Catch pets in the Naruto world?"

"Wait, there's a Pokémon inside." He realized, as information about the Poké Ball flooded his mind.

"Come out, Pikachu!" Tengen called, holding the ball.

A white light flashed, revealing a yellow adorable creature. Pikachu, familiar to anyone who'd seen Pokémon, stood before him.

Pikachu was a short, chubby, rodent-like Pokémon with yellow fur. Its long ears tipped black, its small mouth shaped like a sideways "3." And its black eyes sparkled. Red circles marked its cheeks, and its jagged, lightning-bolt tail had a brown base.

Like Ash Ketchum's beloved partner in the classic series.

"Pika pika!" Pikachu chirped cutely, swaying its tail.

If a girl saw this, she'd squeal over its charm.

"Feels like I've stepped into the Pokémon world." Tengen said, his mouth twitching at Pikachu's antics.

"Let's test Pikachu's skills." He decided, leading it deeper into the forest.

Moments later...

"Thunderbolt!" Tengen commanded.

"Pika-chu!" Sparks crackled around Pikachu, lightning snapping with a thunderstorm's intensity. A thick bolt struck a massive beast nearby.

The creature froze, paralyzed.

"Not super strong, but it can paralyze." Tengen noted. He'd hoped Thunderbolt could rival Sasuke's Kirin, but reality humbled him.

Thunderbolt couldn't kill, but it could immobilize. Tengen tested it, roughly one in five uses caused paralysis.

Plus, Pikachu could recover stamina in the Poké Ball, a handy feature.

"Guess I should thank the RNGod." Tengen mused.

"It's useful enough." He said, storing the Poké Ball in the system's unique storage space, perfect for carrying odd items.

"Pika… chu!" Pikachu hopped onto Tengen's shoulder.

"Not bad." Tengen patting its head.

As he left with Pikachu, the scene felt distinctly un-Pokémon-like.

The paralyzed beast, snapping out of its stupor, bolted away.
