Chapter 02 — The Adventure System

——————

Zhao Yu's words instantly plunged the entire office hall into dead silence.

The detectives, who were gearing up for a big operation, froze in place, staring at Zhao Yu with incredulous expressions.

To them, Zhao Yu must have lost his mind! Captain Jin was the head of the Major Crimes Mobile Team, and with everyone ready to move out, he suddenly asked for leave, and in such a brazen, entitled manner. It was beyond reckless!

Even if he had a genuine emergency, there was no need to go straight to Captain Jin. A quiet word with the team leader would've sufficed. Standing up and requesting leave from the captain like that was practically a deliberate provocation.

Sure enough, Zhao Yu's disruptive outburst caused Captain Jin's face to darken instantly.

"Hey… what's that supposed to mean?" Deputy Captain Liu Changhu seized the opportunity, tilting his head and barking at Zhao Yu. "Zhao Yu, are you out of your mind? Just got your permanent position and you're already acting cocky? Don't you see everyone working hard to catch criminals? Asking for leave now, can you live with your conscience?"

With Liu's words, other team members chimed in, piling on accusations and berating Zhao Yu.

Captain Jin, visibly displeased, shook his head and left the hall.

"See that…" Liu Changhu grew even more emboldened after Jin's departure, pointing at Zhao Yu's nose with a sneer. "Zhao Yu, you're way out of line. Why should you get to leave just because you 'don't feel well'? Where exactly are you unwell? Need us to grab you a pack of tampons or something…"

Liu's taunts grew nastier by the second, sparking raucous laughter from the team.

But amid the laughter, Zhao Yu grabbed his coffee-filled glass and hurled it straight at Liu Changhu's head!

Liu, caught off guard, raised his arm to block. Though he deflected the glass, scalding coffee splashed all over him!

Crash!

The glass hit the floor, shattering into pieces.

"Zhao Yu, have you lost it!?"

Liu Changhu roared, ready to curse Zhao Yu out. But Zhao Yu, like a wild beast, bellowed and charged forward, slamming his shoulder into Liu and sending him flying!

Liu's back crashed into the briefing whiteboard, which skidded across the room.

"You piece of crap cop!" Zhao Yu jabbed a finger at Liu's nose, cursing. "Liu, I've put up with you for too long! In my eyes, you're nothing! Didn't you want coffee? Well, had enough yet?"

Zhao Yu's sudden explosion left the detectives dumbfounded. No one could fathom how the usually meek Zhao Yu had turned so ferocious.

"Zhao Yu, you… you lunatic!" As deputy captain of the Major Crimes Unit, Liu Changhu had never been humiliated like this. Face red with rage, he scrambled to his feet, ready to fight Zhao Yu.

Zhao Yu, once the top enforcer of the Azure Dragon Gang, wasn't fazed by the challenge and lunged forward, ready for a brawl.

Seeing this, the other detectives stepped in to break it up. But some, eager to curry favor with the deputy captain, tried to restrain Zhao Yu, hoping Liu could land a few punches to save face.

To their shock, Zhao Yu's strength was overwhelming. With a single swing of his arm, he flung the burly detectives aside. One even crashed into a cubicle, knocking over a computer and cracking the monitor.

In an instant, the office descended into chaos, papers flying, furniture toppling. Team Leader Qu Ping rushed over to mediate, while Li Beini hurriedly ran toward Zhao Yu.

"You lousy cops!" Zhao Yu roared, pointing at everyone in the room. "You've been messing with me all this time, and I've got it all noted down! I'm warning you, if anyone dares touch me again, don't blame me for getting ruthless!"

Zhao Yu's ferocity stunned Li Beini, freezing her in place. The other detectives were equally intimidated, unable to comprehend how the usually timid Zhao Yu had become so wild.

"Zhao Yu!" Liu Changhu's lips trembled with rage. "You're done for!"

"Who gives a damn!?" Zhao Yu's eyes bulged as he sneered. "Major Crimes Unit? Pfft! Me, a cop? I'd rather lose face than do this!"

With that, Zhao Yu rolled up his sleeves, whistled nonchalantly, and swaggered out of the office. As he left, he slammed the security door so hard the floor shook several times.

Long after he was gone, someone muttered weakly, "Has Zhao Yu lost his mind? What kind of cop calls himself a 'lousy cop'?"

"Yeah! He's usually so mild-mannered, how'd he turn into such a thug?"

"Zhao… Zhao Yu…" Liu Changhu, shaking with anger, gritted his teeth and growled, "You just wait!"

After causing a scene at the station, Zhao Yu felt a slight sense of satisfaction, but the questions swirling in his mind hadn't lessened one bit.

He couldn't understand why he had transmigrated to this parallel world. And what had happened to the Zhao Yu whose body he now occupied? Was this a case of possession or rebirth?

His new memories revealed that this world's Zhao Yu had a similar background to his own, born in a poor rural family with elderly parents.

Their starting points were identical, but their lives had taken completely opposite paths.

One chose a life of crime, becoming a rogue thug; the other excelled academically, graduated from the Public Security University, and became an honorable police officer.

What an ironic twist. In his past life, he was constantly chased by cops. Now, the tables had turned, and he was the cop?

What… am I supposed to carry a gun and chase gangsters now?

This made Zhao Yu seriously consider his future. Since he'd transmigrated, what should he do? Quit the police force and return to his old ways? Or stay on the force and scrape by?

After some thought, Zhao Yu made a brilliant decision: To hell with it! To celebrate my successful transmigration, I'm gonna live it up first!

Before his execution, he'd been locked up in prison for two whole years, without a taste of indulgence. His stomach wasn't hungry, but his physical urges were screaming.

So, Zhao Yu hailed a taxi, planning to head to the city's red-light district for some fun and to take care of his needs first. Everything else could wait.

As the taxi started moving, Zhao Yu noticed a pack of cigarettes next to the driver. Without asking, he grabbed it, pulled out a cigarette, and stuck it in his mouth.

The driver, sensing the vibe, handed him a lighter.

Zhao Yu lit the cigarette with a few clicks, but after one puff, he choked and coughed violently.

Cough, cough, cough…

He hacked so hard it felt like his lungs would burst, pure misery.

Damn it!

Zhao Yu cursed inwardly. Could it be that this world's Zhao Yu doesn't even know how to smoke?

Just as the thought crossed his mind, a buzz shook his head, followed by a clear, resonant voice, neither male nor female, ringing out:

"Adventure System successfully activated. Now randomly selecting a hexagram for you…"

"What the hell?" Zhao Yu blurted at the driver, but the driver's clueless expression made it clear he hadn't heard a thing.

Zhao Yu realized the voice was in his head alone.

"Gen-Dui Hexagram!" The voice was sharp and forceful. "Gen Mountain, Dui Lake. Containing mountains and dew, fortune flows smoothly, five channels aligned…"

The words came fast and stopped abruptly, leaving silence.

Zhao Yu was dazed, not catching a single word.

What was that?

Why am I hearing voices in my head?

Am I sick or something?

Wait a second!

Suddenly, Zhao Yu recalled the first four words—Adventure System!

Adventure System!?

Oh…

As a fan of transmigration stories, Zhao Yu finally connected the dots. In those tales, transmigrators often came with a magical system. With a system, soaring to success and crushing enemies was practically guaranteed!

Hahaha…

Holy crap!

I've got a system too?

But… what exactly does this Adventure System do?
