Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: The Shardkiller’s Grip

Location: Neo-Tokyo Ruins – The Shardheart

Zara's hands shook as the storm around her intensified, thunder cracking so loudly it seemed to shake the very earth. Lightning arced through her body, crackling with the wild energy of the Thunderheart. She could feel it, the first Shard—the Shardkiller—awakening inside her.

Her mind reeled. The figure of the first bearer, a shadow of someone lost to time, floated before her, his eyes glowing with dark, twisted power. The words he spoke echoed like a curse in her head, tearing at her sanity.

"You are the final piece," the figure repeated, its voice heavy with ancient sorrow. "The Shards are mine—and so are you. You will become the weapon they always wanted. You will be my legacy."

Zara gritted her teeth, but it felt as though the storm had fused with her very soul. The fire, the ice, the shadow, and now the lightning—each of the Shards within her fought for control, tugging at her consciousness, threatening to tear her apart.

"No," she muttered, shaking her head violently. "I am not you. I will not be you."

The wind howled as the Shardkiller surged inside her, pulling at the very fibers of her being. Her body spasmed, electricity jolting through her veins, twisting her muscles. The dark figure laughed—a sound that shook the very sky.

"You cannot escape me," the voice whispered. "You will become the vessel for the Shards' true power. Their chaos. Their destruction."

Zara gasped for air, struggling to keep her mind intact as the Shards writhed within her, the storm raging with unnatural fury. Her legs buckled, and she fell to her knees, her breath coming in ragged gasps. She could feel the ancient power of the Shardkiller threatening to overwhelm her, bending her will to its dark force.

But through the haze, she heard a voice—her own, faint but determined.

You are not alone.

It was Eira's voice. She was still with her, in spirit. The team was still fighting for her.

Zara's eyes snapped open. The Shards were all in her. But they didn't define her. She defined them.

With every ounce of strength she could muster, she reached deep within, feeling the power of each Shard. The flame surged to life, the cold of ice enveloped her, the shadows wrapped around her like a shield, and the thunder within her rang loud like a bell.

"I am the Shards," Zara declared, her voice strong, though every word felt like a battle. "But I will not be their weapon."

The storm surged again, lightning cracking through the ruins, but this time, it didn't tear her apart. She embraced it, becoming the eye of the storm, the center of chaos.

The figure of the first bearer flickered, his form wavering as the energy from the Shards fought to consume him. He snarled in frustration. "You think you can control this power? You think you can wield the Shards without becoming them?"

Zara's eyes burned with an intense, unyielding light. "I won't become you."

The Shardkiller screeched as it twisted, but Zara held on—she was the one who would control the storm. The winds howled as she stood tall, pulling the Shardkiller into alignment with the rest of the Shards within her. The ancient power of the first bearer began to disintegrate, its hold on her mind breaking.

The figure howled, a final, desperate cry, and then—nothing.

The storm calmed.

Zara stood alone in the crater, her breath ragged, her body shaking with the aftereffects of the battle she'd just won. But she felt different. Changed. The Shards had tried to claim her, to make her their servant, their weapon. But she had pushed back. She had chosen to wield their power.

And now, she felt whole—like a part of something larger, something ancient. The Shards had no hold over her. She was their master.

But at what cost?

Location: Silver City – Nightbound HQ

Helena paced nervously in the operations room, glancing up at the screens showing the data from Neo-Tokyo. The storm had subsided. The seismic activity had calmed. But something didn't feel right.

Myles's voice crackled over the comms. "We're getting a signal from Zara. She's alive, but—"

Helena's heart skipped a beat. "But what?"

"Something's changed," Myles said. "Her Aether readings are off the charts. She's... not herself."

Helena's stomach dropped. "She's not herself? What does that mean?"

Before Myles could respond, Zara's voice echoed through the comms, cold and commanding.

"I've succeeded."

Zara stood amidst the ruins, the Shards pulsing inside her. Her body was drenched in sweat, her hair sticking to her face, but there was an undeniable power in her eyes. The storm had calmed, but the aftermath had left its mark on her.

"Zara?" Helena's voice crackled through her comm. "Are you alright?"

Zara looked at the ruins around her. The Shardkiller had been defeated—for now. But something lingered within her. Something ancient, something that had awakened during her battle.

"I've succeeded," Zara repeated, her voice distant, colder than before. "But at a cost."

"You're scaring me, Zara," Helena said, her tone softening with concern. "What's happening to you?"

Zara didn't answer immediately. Her eyes flickered with something dark—something she couldn't control. She had beaten the first bearer, but now, the Shards felt like they were a part of her, consuming her from the inside.

"I'm not sure," Zara finally whispered, her voice barely audible. "But I will not let them destroy me."

There was a pause on the other end. Then, softly, Helena said, "We're coming for you."

Zara didn't respond. She just stood there, staring at the horizon, where the storm had passed and left only silence.

And yet, deep within her, the Shards stirred.

The High Herald stood before the Shardkiller, now dimmed and still in its resting place. Her fingers traced the jagged edges of the crystal, a smile curling at her lips.

"It's begun," she murmured to herself. "Zara Kane has become the vessel we always knew she would. And now... we bring the end."

Her voice was a whisper, but it carried the weight of a thousand storms.
