Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: The Edge of Storms

Location: Silver City – Nightbound HQ

The tension in the operations room was palpable. Myles's fingers were a blur across the holographic console, tracking Zara's location as the rest of the team watched in silence. The calm after the storm had come, but it didn't bring peace.

Helena paced in the corner, her brow furrowed with worry. She could feel it—something had shifted in Zara. The Zara she had known—the Zara who fought for the world, who defied the Eclipsed Order—was fading. Something darker, colder, had taken her place.

"What do we do, Myles?" Helena's voice was low, edged with uncertainty. "What happens now?"

Myles glanced up, his face grim. "I'm tracking her Aether signature. The Shards inside her are resonating at a frequency we've never seen before. She's more powerful than ever, but it's... chaotic. I can't get a clear read on her."

"Is she still... herself?" Eira asked from the back of the room, her voice soft, filled with concern.

Myles didn't answer immediately, his eyes fixed on the screen. Then, he sighed. "I don't know. But the way her energy is fluctuating—it's almost as if she's... fighting herself. I've never seen anything like this before. We need to get to her before it consumes her."

Helena's heart clenched. "Then we're going after her."

Location: Neo-Tokyo Ruins – The Shardheart

Zara stood in the center of the storm-ravaged plaza, the Shards pulsing within her, each one whispering their own desires, their own needs. She could feel their power—so much power—but it came with a cost. Her mind, once sharp and clear, now felt like a battlefield. The Shards had found her, and they were changing her, remaking her into something beyond what she had ever imagined.

The Shardkiller, the last of the five, was silent now, buried deep within her, but its presence was undeniable. It had twisted her thoughts, reshaped her emotions. The power was intoxicating, but it was also suffocating. She could feel herself slipping, the edges of her consciousness beginning to blur.

"You are the storm," the voice of the first bearer whispered again, a distant echo. "You were always meant to be."

"No," Zara whispered to herself, her voice barely audible. "I wasn't. I never was."

But it didn't matter. The power within her surged, and she felt the world around her bend, rip, and twist as if it were just another part of the storm.

In the distance, she saw a familiar figure—Helena. Her heart skipped a beat, but the cold emptiness inside her seemed to swallow that fleeting warmth. Helena was coming for her. But did she even deserve saving anymore?

Zara's hand instinctively reached toward the Shards, feeling their power flood through her. The shadow inside her stirred. It whispered promises of domination, of control. It promised that if she embraced it fully, she could become something beyond any of them.

But that voice was no longer hers.

Helena stood in front of the mirror, her reflection cold and unfamiliar. The storm had passed, but the uncertainty in her heart was growing stronger. They were about to confront Zara—the friend, the hero who had always fought for a better future. But now, that same future felt uncertain. The Zara they were chasing had changed.

"She's still in there," Helena whispered to her reflection, but even she wasn't sure if she believed it anymore.

Eira's voice interrupted her thoughts. "Helena, we need to move. The storm's passed, but Zara's not the same. We have no idea what she's capable of now."

Helena nodded sharply, turning to the rest of the team. "We need to go. Now."

The Nightbound stepped out, their mission clear: confront Zara, save her if they could—but if not, stop her before the power inside her tore the world apart.

Location: Neo-Tokyo Ruins – The Shardheart

Zara felt the energy build around her. She could hear the hum of the Shards, each one urging her to release their full potential, to wield them like weapons of destruction. The storm in her mind raged with the force of a hurricane. The Shards were not just inside her—they were her.

Then, through the haze, she heard Helena's voice again, clear and familiar.

"Zara, please!"

Zara's eyes flickered. For a brief second, her will wavered. She could feel the pull of her old self—the person who fought for the people, for the future. But that person was slipping away, buried beneath layers of power and darkness.

"You can't save me," Zara said, her voice cold and distant. "I am the storm now. I am everything the Shards were meant to be."

Helena's figure moved into view, cautious but determined. "Zara, please. You're not alone in this. We can still fix this. We can bring you back."

Zara's gaze hardened, her eyes flickering with the light of the Shards. "It's too late for that. I've already chosen."

The air around Zara crackled with energy as her power surged, dark and tempestuous. The ground beneath them cracked as the storm inside her boiled over.

"No!" Helena shouted, stepping forward, arms outstretched. "We won't give up on you!"

But Zara's lips curled into a faint, sad smile, as if she understood something Helena didn't.

"It's not up to you anymore."

The ground exploded beneath her feet, and the air was filled with the roar of thunder. The Shards had taken hold, and Zara was no longer just a vessel for their power—she was their harbinger.

Myles's fingers danced across his console as he tracked Zara's signature. "Her energy's spiking," he muttered. "We need to hurry."

"We will," Helena said, her voice low but filled with determination. "We have to."

But as she turned toward the exit, the warning alarms blared across the room.

A new signal had appeared.

The Shardkiller was awake. And it was calling to Zara.
