Ahote and Mitena led you eastward, along with what remained of the pack. You passed through the woods toward a hiding spot where they'd cached a means of escape—two tour buses peeked out from deep green foliage in an overgrown and long-abandoned parking lot. The elders had collaborated to keep an alternative method of withdrawal secret from the rest of the pack, just in case Sonoma became unreasonable enough that they had to flee for their lives. Several weeks' worth of nonperishable food supplies filled the back seats, leaving just enough room for the wolves to pack tightly into the seats as Ahote took the wheel and began the drive to Mitena's safe house.
