Chapter 36 - INVITATION

Walking towards the building, he stared at the two strangers on top of the building making sure he kept eye contact with them planning to run after them the moment they tried to escape.

Contrary to his expectations, the two of them just stared back at him like they were waiting for him.

'They don't seem scared at all, rather they seem quite confident in themselves.' He thought while frowning.

'But that changes nothing' he thought with a smile on his face.

'Once they show any signs of being hostile I'll directly combine the powers of both the lion and the strange man then directly crush them, if I still can't match up to them then I'll just devour their genes, if that won't work then I'll just run away.'

'I don't believe they can stop me if I am intent on running.'

He entered the building then went to the top floor directly, he could see the two men still waiting for him there like it was within their expectations.

"You're quite sensitive boy, took a while to find you." Nat said.

David was still at alert watching for any movements from them and asked "Why are you following me?"

"Nice to meet you, the name's Eric." He said while extending a hand to David for a handshake.

David looked at the hand outstretched in front of him without making a move to accept it "You haven't answered my question, why are you following me?"

Eric just smiled at his cautious behavior and said "I know you're the one who killed the mutated lion that broke out from the zoo"

David's expression didn't fluctuate when he heard this since he already knew anyone who investigated the fight between the two of them or at least knew a bit about it would also come to this conclusion.

"So what? Why are you still following me?"

"I am here to formally invite you to join our team"

David was a bit surprised to hear this but soon thought it was normal since even a ragtag group formed by Michael could attempt to form their own group then others would also try the same thing.

"I am not interested in joining any groups" He said firmly.

"Don't be in a hurry to choose kid" Nat said.

"We are from the Alpha strike team and we work directly for the government, I am inviting you because I value you as a talent" Eric said.

"No, I am still not interested, if I join the strike team or whatever you call it then how am I supposed to still live my life? Will I leave school or what? Then what should I tell my parents?" David asked.

Perhaps because of his recent encounters or because of the fusions he made with others he had become very bold, too much even.

It looked like his very attitude was being influenced and he needed a solution to it before it was too late.

"Don't worry about that, you don't need to report to us or do any kind of trainings, all we need is your loyalty and membership as one of the nation's forces and you can enjoy all the privileges entitled to it."

"Of course the privileges you enjoy won't be on the same level as those working full-time for the force but it's still the highest level of privilege the government has to offer."

David listened to Eric's words with disbelief written all over his face and asked "Are you really sure about that? Isn't that the same thing as collecting paychecks without working even an hour?"

"What if there's no incident that requires the attention of the special force then won't I just collect paychecks and benefits for years without working a dime?"

Eric just smiled in response and said "All these privileges are only for the mutants favored and valued by the government"

"You see the world is gradually changing into something new and everyone on the planet can feel it, it's not only you or me. It's just that the way everyone reacts to it is different"

"Some ignore it, others take it as the norms, and some feel it deeply and know about the changes but have no ability to change the situation while others curse themselves for being the unlucky ones."

"Among them, the minority that the changes affect the most either mutate to become the newest force on the planet known as the mutants while others die during the process."

David just watched blankly as he took in this information and asked the question that was gnawing at the back of his mind.

"Since when exactly have mutants appeared and how much is the estimated amount of mutants in the world?"

"Since when?" Eric heard those questions then smiled brightly.

He turned back then looked at David in the eye and asked "Are you really sure you want to know when the first mutant appeared?"

David remained silent then nodded his head.

Eric walked back to the edge of the building where Nat was sitting without uttering a single word and said

"Humans adapt to changes so quickly they seem to not notice what occurs around them, a major reason why anything that happens around normal humans are just taken as normal by the populace."

"A change in 0.2 degrees Celsius won't affect the world much, they just take it as norms when a few die and move on, they adapt, but during that change a few don't just adapt to it but also take advantage of it."

"And over the years there have been a lot of different changes in the Earth's composition, but the first time for such an occurrence was ten years ago."

Eric said while David's eyes widened in shock.
